I don't go the movies too often, but when I do, there's nothing worse than waiting on line only to discover that the movie you want to see is sold out. Fortunately, representatives of Universal Pictures, Warner Bros. Entertainment and Digital Cinema Implementation Partners want to change all that by offering a digital film delivery system. This system would give theaters the ability to play popular movies on extra screens to meet high demands.
Currently, the process is in its early stages and would use "satellite and broadband delivery systems to beam digital films directly to theaters, rather than have them copied onto hard drives and delivered by hand..." Not only will movie goers be satisfied, Hollywood would also benefit from digital films as a means to combat film piracy and bootlegging.
An estimated 2,200 U.S. theater screens presently display digital films. Will they come to a movie theater near you? [via MSNBC]
