Are kids really still playing with Tamagotchis? I thouhgt the little virtual pets were a 1990s fad, but according to cell-phone content guys PlayPhone, they're still huge sellers. On the back of the apparently ongoing Tamagotchi craze, PlayPhone is releasing their first branded kids' phone this summer. The Tamagotchi Phone will be sold prepaid-only, using Cingular's physical network but Tamagotchi-branded minute cards. The phone itself is a reworked Motorola V190, a basic and popular flip phone, dressed up with Tamagotchi art and packed with Tamagotchi content. Kids ages 9-14 -- that's the target market -- can play with their little pets on the phone, interact with other Tamagotchi fans through the WAP browser, and buy online Tamagotchi stuff by using their prepaid minutes as cash. Parents, meanwhile, will be able to control their kids' phone use through a Web interface, blocking or allowing specific phone numbers and features like text messaging and WAP access.
PlayPhone will be selling the Tamagotchi phone online and through electronics and toy stores, not at Cingular stores. It will cost under $100, they say.
