BDPS1.jpg Don't want to spend $1,000 on Sony's BDP-S1 Blu-ray player (pictured here)? Well, neither do I! Sony announced today that it is releasing a cheaper Blu-ray player that will cost just $599 with the same capabilities. The BDP-S300 is reported to be a smaller system than the BDP-S1, and will be able to output 1080p. It will also play CDs, a feature that the BDP-S1 player lacks.

Expect the Sony BDP-S300 to be released early this summer.

Without really getting into the Blu-Ray v. HD-DVD format debate, I like the trend this is making. More affordable high-def players for all!

This means that sony might lower the price of the PS3.

Why would you buy one of these when you can get a PS3 with more functionality at the same price? And why would they lower the price of the PS3 when it does everything this player would do and so much more?

Sony has never understood American marketing. If they did, we would all have had Beta Max. As producers of Blue-Ray movies, the smart thing would be to give the players away cheaply and recoup the costs on media.

They won't, and HD will take over the market. More's the pity...
