Swiss automaker Rinspeed has turned its eXasis, a conceptual design, into an actual drivable "glass car." The car, with a completely transparent body and floor, will be shown for the first time at next month's Geneva Motor Show.

The vehicle's outer shell is made of Makrolon. Molded by the Swiss firm Mecaplex and coated with a tinge of yellow by the German hard-coatings specialist KRD, it reveals the vehicle's load-bearing aluminum chassis. Though the vehicle is called a "glass car," Makrolon is actually a polycarbonate resin supplied by Bayer MaterialScience. The thermoplastic provides superior strength and stability with a glass-like transparency.

The eXasis is powered by an extremely lightweight 150-bhp Weber engine driven by CO2 emission–reducing bioethanol. The car only weighs 750 kg because of its lightweight plastic construction, meaning one horsepower has to shift only 5kg—a power/weight ratio comparable to a Porsche's.
