A major downfall of using computers every day is the chance that one will develop Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS). Sure, there are ergonomic keyboards and mice to help prevent and/or alleviate the syndrome, but a new study found that genetics, not hand use, is the cause of CTS. David Ring, MD, senior author of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons study, explained that "the link between hand use and carpal tunnel syndrome is overstated and may be inaccurate. In contrast, there is strong evidence for an inherent, genetic risk for CTS. CTS sufferers are most likely
innocent bystanders and should not be blamed for their illness."
If you experience numbness with pain during the night or when you wake up, it may be a sign of CTS. So rest assured computer users: extensive computer use may not lead to CTS after all!!
