This week's Gearlog Radio podcast begins with the top story of the week: XM and Sirius are merging. We discuss what this means for satellite radio customers and if you'll need to dish out even more cash for the service. Camera junkie Terry Sullivan joins us to reveal the latest cameras from Canon and Nikon, including one that records HD video! Brian Heater's theory on the whole iPhone trademark dispute isn't a crazy conspiracy after all. The Weird Hunter calls to our attention one of the strangest vibrating devices she's ever heard of. And Brian talks with us again to say his prayers for the death of Microsoft Word's Clip-It.

Good episode!
I have to go with Brian on exactly how Engadget and Gizmodo make their daily bread - the only way you can turn out the kind of post volume that those blogs do is by watering down your content in favor of copy/pasting press releases and publishing "first" photos and unboxing pictures - I think there's a place for blogs like that, they tend to get the press releases and they tend to hear from the marketing agents first when they go looking for publicity on their products, and that's totally fine, but people, especially consumers, need to be wary and know that they're reading a blog about the "newest and hottest" versus something that's supposed to help them make critical buying decisions.
It's all about separation of media, and the different missions of different technology publications - while Engadget wants to bring you all the up to the second newest this and that, other venues pride themselves on reviews and useful information. I think Joel did something good (if it's the only good thing about it) by bringing to the fore those two types of blogs and media, but as far as his tone and demeanor? Trolling, pure and simple - attention for attention's sake. :) Good job!

Hey ... watch that comment about not listening to internet radio in the car. I 'sort of do' using a Palm Treo 700p on the Sprint EVDO network running pTunes or Kinoma. I stick my Treo in my iGrip holder, plug in the audio to my car radio and voilå. (but ususally I'm listing to podcasts ... cough, cough ... Gearlog Podcasts)
