shutdown day March 24

It's hard enough to go a day without Gearlog, but a full day without computers? Is that even possible? 12,032 people (at time of post) seem to think so, at least, according to the responses at the Shutdown Day Web site. And this isn't some kind of protest against PCs or technology in general. The site calls it a "global experiment," to see how many people would be willing to give up their computers for 24 hours on March 24, 2007, and to see what happens.

Right now, only 1,786 people have responded that they can't do it, but my guess is that when the Day rolls around in about a month, many others will find the temptation of their PCs stronger than the novelty of a global experiment. I'll still give it a shot, though, as a test of willpower, if nothing else.

So what will you do with your time off from the precious PC? The Shutdown Day site tries to help out, posting a video of alternative uses for your laptop. The suggestions demonstrate varying degrees of success (laptop as ping pong paddle--not bad; laptop as ice fishing bait--not so much).

I can be PC celebant for one day, sure, even more than that. But I really don't see the point of this other than "seeing what happens". Now if this was done during the week when people work, that'd be a different story!

Can't we start one of those races where we get people to sponsor us? You know, for every day you don't use your computer you get X amount of dollars donated to your charity of choice? Now THAT'D be a global experiment.

That...that's a Saturday.

I...I dunno if I can do that. ::wrings hands:: Can I substitute another day? Like a weekend I'm out of town at my girlfriend's mom's place? She's got dialup, so I'm pretty much out of luck anyway!
