Apparently there's an entire industry based on smelly USB flash drives that I wasn't aware of, but I'm glad I know about them now. Kind of a mix between a portable air freshener and portable data storage all rolled into the same package, the Debreu Scent Drive is made of a metallic alloy with bamboo motif etching on the back of the drive that allows air to flow through. When the drive is plugged into your computer via USB, it slowly warms a scented disc in the back of the drive soaked with scented oils, emitting fragrance that makes your office or cubicle smell just a little fresher for about 2 hours of continuous use. What the drive smells like exactly isn't listed, but the site does mention that the disk is removable to be refilled with additional fragrance oils, so you could potentially buy any scented oil you'd like your office to smell like and apply it to the drive.
The drive itself is USB 2.0 and comes in a variety of sizes, from 128MB to 1GB. While the obvious use is a gift for the colleague whose cubicle always seems to smell a little "fresh" when you walk by, this could also be perfect for people who are into aromatherapy but have to work long hours, or even those of us who don't particularly care for that default "office" smell. Because it's USB storage, the Debreu Scent Drive is compatible with any OS that supports USB. Debreu promises that the data retention on the drive will be up to 10 years, but doesn't list how many writes/rewrites the drive will support. Pricing information for the smelly drive or when it will be available for purchase are both unavailable. [via Everything USB]
