It seems like all of my peripherals are USB these days and all the coolest gadgets that I'd like to buy are USB as well, from USB lights to USB coffee mug warmers. Unfortunately, I just don't have enough USB ports to make my dreams of a desk full of USB gadgets come true. Thanks to Japanese electronics firm Century; I just might get my wish.

Century has unveiled a 16-port USB hub, a massive brick that sits on your desktop and can be connected to two separate computers and toggled between the two using a switch on the side. A USB hub this large definitely requires independent AC power, and there's a power switch on the front so you can turn it on and off.

No word on when it'll be released and how much it'll cost, or even if it'll make it across the ocean to retailers in the United States. Still, it looks like a much better option than simply chaining together several USB hubs. My question though, is whether or not your average computer can handle that many USB devices connected to it at any given time.

Ooooh, 16 ports? I finally got a six-port hub a few weeks ago and it's made my life so much nicer. But 16 ports might make my life 2.67 times nicer still...hmmm...

I wonder if an average computer can handle 16 usb devices? I thought you could theoretically run 127 devices through one usb port with hubs, and so forth?

You're right, gomez - the theoretical limit of daisy-chained USB devices is something like 127, but I wonder if any machine can handle 16 simultaneously connected digital camcorders or external hard drives all transferring data to the hard drive, and other similar uses. ;)
