Ever since Apple announced the iPhone, I've wondered how long until someone would clone the user interface and put it on an existing phone. I didn't have to wait long! Thanks to Mo from SimToGo, and his cool iPhony hack, my Treo 650 looks like the iPhone -- six months early.
Alas, Apple is not amused. The company has taken to the courts to get these rudimentary application launchers removed from websites around the world. I guess these pale imitations were endangering Apple's sleek and sexy, yet overpriced new phone. Brickbats to Apple, who seems to have nearly as many over-zealous lawyers as they do smart engineers
I was lucky enough to find the Treo version before it totally disappeared. I easily assigned Treo functionality to the buttons, and now I can impress all the geeks with my iTreo. The buttons lead to my built in applications, and I assigned the screen to pop up when I hold down the side button (who needs that Real Player anyway?)
I love a clever hack, and this certainly qualifies.
Now if only I could figure out a way to turn the phone off when it gets close to my face, and see a random-access list of my voice mail on the screen... (sigh)

Apple are fast becoming Microsoft, Jr.

Oh, except their stuff usually works.

Sure, dark shadows, poor lighting, anything looks good. But it is still a Treo, still iMac-ish, and still on the cellular system.
Give me a land-line, enough phone cord, and some high-tech gadgetry and I an have a much more reliable system. At least my batter won't run down...

Hey, are you criticizing my photography skills? It was late last night, and that's all the light I had in my kitchen! At least you can see it.
Yeah, it is still a Treo. And I'm not the biggest Treo fan. But at least it has real buttons.

Jim,
I am a moderator over at pdaphonehome.com, and if you want random access to e-mail, check out CallWave Mobile. CallWave let's you forward your calls (no answer/busy transfer) to their system, then TXT Message you the call information, and e-mail you the voice mail itself.
I have been using it for over 6 months on my Samsung i730, and all of my voice mails are e-mailed to me, allowing random access to any message, and I just play it out of e-mail. I even set up a separate e-mail account just for the voice mail to be sent, and it checks it automatically each hour, and I do it manually when I need to listen to messages.
I then use the desktop application for accessing the voice mail (which also lets you intercept calls and take on different lines), and I never call in to my voice mail now.
I don't have any connection to them, it has just changed my life with the way I access and deal with calls on my mobile phone. Been a big fan for years, even through the TechTV days.

Boo Apple! I mean, I'm an Apple lover, I've been frequently referred to as a "fanboi/y/ie" and the like, but come ON! This is a little much, guys. Interface be damned, this is the kind of thing that demands praise! The fans will do your marketing for you! Honestly...
So sad, so sad. This kinda makes me want to get a Treo though. ;)

thanks for the photo.I loaded it. I have a Palm Tre350 and I'm now the coolest man in the smokin lounge.
...that is all.

I did the same thing on my PDA - downloaded an ipod interface to play my music on - it's just for fun though and isn't nearly as useable as i had hoped. then again, my mother-in-law has the 30GB video ipod and she has lots of trouble with it - she can barely play a single playlist (she only has two) without having trouble. I'm just hoping technology doesn't leave me behind when I get older, and I'm an I.S. guy!

No-one is stopping anyone from making an application launcher that looks iPhone-esque. The issue here, which is clear from the screenshots of iPhony, is that they didn't just make something that looks sort of like it.... they actually copied the original iPhone artwork, which is copyrighted. It is ridiculous to blame Apple for protecting their copyright, and any company would have to do the same thing, or risk losing control of it. Seriously, if people want to make an iPhone-like skin, just make something in the same style but use original artwork, and you won't have anything to worry about. It seems cheap to make Apple out to be the bad guy here, when they have little choice but to protect their copyrighted artwork. Aside from that though, I think this is a little silly to say that a Treo with the iPhony-skin is like an iPhone. That implies that the iPhone is nothing but a skin, and otherwise is no different from a Treo. Speaking as a Treo 650 owner myself, it is pretty clear that they are very different in terms of the overall UI, and that goes a lot further than just the artwork for icons, etc.

Brickbats to apple too! All the icons are generic and this will not stop at iphony icons. How about mac mini clones!
January 18, 2007 2:27 PM
I agree with Zadillo, this is pretty silly Jim. The reason people drooled all over themselves over the annoucement wasn't because of the looks, it was because of the functionality. I doubt a simple skin can do half the stuff of the actual iPhone, like know which way you're holding it, or mimic it's touch screen capabilities. Give us a break!
Btw, isn't Vista just an OS X skin for Windows? j/k - sorta

Doesn't it strike you as extremely hypocritical that a week ago they flagrantly abuse Cisco's actual trademark, claiming that they are not violating intellectual property, but now they're threatening people for trying to make their personal phone screen look similar to the Apple phone screen? No one over 9 years old would confuse the two.

Let me see someone hack Vista. And they can expect to end up in Prison, trying to protect their buns, from the booty bandits.
January 18, 2007 2:50 PM
Jim - nice find. I followed suit on my 700P and it is a bit better than the default Palm Launcher interface. And, if you ever find out how to turn off the damn screen while using the phone, please share it with your readers. This engineering oversight is probably the biggest contributer to having about 1-day of battery life on this device.

Wow, you sure can tell the Macheads in these comments. Anyway, good article.

Any way to still get a copy of iPhony? e-mail, etc.? I'd like to see it in action. Then, of course, I would delete is so as not to upset Apple. :) Let me know if anyone can e-mail the files.
