Well, that was fast! Hard on the heels of Steve Jobs's headline-stealing announcement of the Apple iPhone yesterday, Cisco has filed suit against Apple, claiming it has owned the catchy moniker since 2000--the year it acquired InfoGear Technology Corp., which originally registered the name.

Apparently Cisco and Apple have been negotiating for months, but never came to a final agreement. And of course, Cisco quite recently came out with a product named the iPhone. Come on, Cisco; that's just silly. Apple should have exclusive rights to all things named "i"-whatever. But you'll get some nice PR overflow, so maybe it's not so silly after all.

Hah. This'll be funny.

Well, actually, I've seen several sites where the argument is raging hot and flame-y, "Apple has i-everything else, Cisco sucks!" "Cisco should take Apple for all it's worth because it's cool to hate Apple now!" and back and forth essentially, with about that much substance.

Meanwhile back at the ranch (reality), Apple and Cisco will probably go back to the negotiating table and work out some ridiculously huge settlement to make Cisco shut up and the iPhone fly off the shelves.

Besides, even if Cisco rightfully owns the name, do they really think anyone's going to BUY that thing they call an iPhone? I think both companies knew exactly what they were doing, and both of them are being duplicitous about it. :D
