For all the bells and whistles my phone touts, I never seem to use it for more than making phone calls, checking the time and the occasional text message. Navigating through the cumbersome interface is just too much work and even selecting new ringtones can be a chore. Knowing many cell phone users face these difficulties, Alltel Wireless has recently announced Celltop for their wireless phones. Celltop is a free technology that allows users to easily customize their wireless experience, and navigate through the information they actually care about more efficiently.
Basically, Celltop splits your phone's screen in half, into category-specific graphics and text that provide you with easy access to weather, stock quotes, sports coverage, and ringtones. Celltop uses "cells" that are similar to desktop widgets, and is open to user expandability. Ten cells are preinstalled, but more can be added, and each cell is customizable as well. Alltel plans to release new cells in the upcoming months through its store.
The Samsung u520 is currently the only Celltop-ready phone, but more phones from Motorola and LG are set to release soon.
