dragonflynew.jpg How do trends get started? First one company rolls out a flying toy (the pint-sized Picco flying helicopter), , then it seems like everyone's got the, er, bug. Now Robosapien manufacturer Wow Wee! is preparing to roll out a flying bug. "Dragonfly," part of Wow Wee's apparently new "FlyTech" sub-brand, is about the size of your fist and can fly around the room or out doors.

According to a preliminary manual posted on the Federal Communications Commission web site, the remote-controlled toy is made of "crash-resistant" material. It flies by beating its wings in much the same was as a real dragon fly would. There is a tiny tail rotor to help stabilize it. It has two flying modes: Beginner and Expert and charges directly on the remote--the eyes pulse as it charges. That could be a little creepy.

Wow Wee isn't talking yet about the new toy. The information was discovered by other blogs on the FCC's web site. Any radio-controlled device that uses part of the radio broadcast spectrum must meet FCC requirements and get the body's approval to make sure it will not interfere with other FCC approved devices and even public broadcasts.

Is this a robot? I can't tell. The instructions say nothing about intelligence or sensors and it does appear to be all remote controlled, though they do note that the toy's designed form children 8 and up. No word on pricing or release schedule.

Pretty neat! Can it fly in all weather? How high can it fly? How long can it stay up? How is it controlled? Can a miniture infrared camera be incorperated?

I have this dragonfly and it is a lot of fun. My dogs like to chase after it. I still have not mastered the controls and can only fly in a circle. It has a styrofoam like body and it really is a sturdy toy. Its fun.
