motorolaQ.jpgOne of these days I'm splurging and buying a smartphone. I encounter so many situations while on the train or out of town when having one would be so convenient. And it doesn't surprise me at all that smartphone sales have increased 230 percent. According to The NPD Group, 715,000 units were sold from January to October of this year. Why this rise in sales? Because "Prices have declined by 10 percent on average since January 2006; Smartphones meet the growing demand for personal e-mail usage; and Devices now boast significantly greater data storage capacity than standard phones, and many provide slots for removable memory cards."

Which smartphones were among the top sellers this year?
1. Motorola Q
2. Palm Treo 650
3. Verizon Wireless XV6700
4. Palm Treo 700p
5. BlackBerry 8700

Maybe you'll add one to your holiday shopping list?

I'm definitely converted. I didn't think I'd ever have use for a smartphone, I was one of those people who always wanted my PDA and my phone to be two different devices, and I was a staunch believer that smartphones hadn't come far enough to be worthwhile, easy to use, and attractive and comfortable enough to press against my ear.

Then came phones like the Treo, and the Blackberry Pearl, and the Motorola Q. It's been a recent conversion, I have to say, but I definitely will make my next phone a smartphone.

Would y'all believe I don't own a smartphone?

When Verizon Wireless has an affordable smartphone service plan, I'll be able to buy one. It isn't about desire - or device price. It's about the huge monthly fee VZW charges to turn the darn thing on.

I'm holding out for more of the 3G broadband speeds on the smart phones. It's only a matter of time before that's standard. At that point the prices might be worth it, I love the concept but it's not worth almost tripling my monthly bill.

As usual, you're on point Sascha: I'm with Verizon Wireless as well, and the only way I get away with having a blackberry is that my office gave me one and foots the bill. Every time I look at what Verizon is charging for service plans, it makes me shudder, and definitely not with delight. :(

I switched from a RAZR to a BlackBerry 7130c recently. It's the first Blackberry that has the same form factor as a bar phone. Only 3mm wider than my RAZR and 17mm thick. It's really light and has a great keyboard. With EDGE being fast, it's a pleasure to have my email available. It also has a very easy to use interface with adjustable everything including font size, bold, etc. I'm definitely converted. With long battery life, a nice style with a large, colorful, bright display it cannot be beat. My phone bill only increased $25 per monthy for unlimited data. Now I can get out of the office ealier and still stay on top of my email. Also since more of my friends are converting to smart phones it's nice to have email instead of just text messaging.
