I knew my '80s playlist on my iPod was a sought-after item, but Targus goes the extra mile to prevent potential Pod poachers from enjoying Duran Duran's, "Hungry like a Wolf" without my saying so. The Targus Mobile Security Lock for the iPod looks to stem crime by putting it in lockdown.
At first I had been a bit confused as to how the device actually worked. The packaging is vague, saying only "a perfect solution for student, mobile listeners, backpackers or desktop usage." The Targus Mobile Security Lock includes the sturdy dock connector that locks onto the iPod, and the dock connector is attached to a plastic base via a vinyl coated steel cable. To actually make this safety device effective the plastic base needs to be wrapped around an object such as a backpack handle. Once connected to the iPod via the bottom dock, the Security Lock cannot be removed until the correct combination is imputed by using the dials on the lock.
I've thankfully not had an attempted theft on my iPod but I do realize the threat is out there. However, using the Targus Security Lock adds a certain level of inconvenience when doing the very traveling that Targus states you need the lock for. Weighing iPod safety versus ease of use may be a personal decision, but those seeking peace of mind while on the street, the Targus Mobile Security Lock does the job for $29.99.

::giggle:: Maybe this would make a great holiday gift for that family who's suing over the lost iPod...
