Watch out, Verizon. Sprint just turned on three more cities with their super-high-speed EV-DO Rev A network today. Sprinters in Las Vegas, Milwaukee and Seattle join San Diegans with the ability to download files at speeds that are realistically around 800-1000 kbps, and upload files at speeds much faster than the 153 kbps of the older Rev 0 system.
Rev. A is the fastest cellular network out there right now, and it's especially important to Sprint because they need it to create a Nextel-quality push-to-talk system and thus to be able to eventually shut down the old Nextel network. Verizon has announced plans for Rev. A next year, but hasn't turned any cities on yet. Cingular and T-Mobile are working with an entirely different technology, HSDPA, which Cingular has in about 50 metro areas and T-Mobile will be launching next year. It's just about as fast as Rev. A on downloads, but slower on uploads. To use Rev. A right now, you need a laptop with a PC Card like the Sierra Aircard 595 (at left). But there are rumors of a Rev A smart phone coming out soon from HTC and UTStarcom. We can't wait to see it.

I use the Novatel U720 USB broadband REV A card. It works better than my cable modem at home. Plus, using the USB I can use an extension cable to move the U720 away from my laptop or other electrical equipment, like my printer. When I'm in the limo, I use the longer extension cable to position the U720 closer to the window, which improves my reception. The U720 is the only way to go because it's one of the fastest, it's firmware upgradeable, and it's USB.
