Last night on the news, I heard about the new high-tech automated porta-potty being installed in Center City, Philadelphia. The first public toilet in Philly, the toilet will cost 25 cents to use. And after each use, the inside of the bathroom is completely sanitized.
Martin McDonough from Wall USA says that "the toilet is servo motor driven, microprocessor controlled. It's got the latest in automated technology. It's self-cleaning within 50 seconds."
Hmmmm, this is a good idea and all, but what if you really have to go? Waiting 50 seconds may seem like forever!

That's pretty cool-I like the idea of the toilet that doesn't need an attendant or doesn't need janitor-cleaning very often. They were going to put toilets like those in the Washington DC Metro system a while ago (our subways don't have toilets!) but they decided against it, citing "security concerns," but at least it's making it somewhere!
Here's to public restrooms that aren't out and out narsty!

I just had a wonderful vision of dozens of people, swarming around this thing, all doing the pee-pee-dance. Hilarious!

They have pay public toilets like this is France--what's great is that if someone tries to get out of paying by grabbing the door before it closes (after the person in front of them leaves), they get sprayed down with Le Clorox.

I've used that in San Francisco. It's really not all that cool; just takes longer between people.
