It used to be that if you couldn't find something to watch on TV you could always pop in a video game. But now you might put the video game on hold to download an episode of South Park. And we're not just talking about a YouTube style service where average users post their favorite shows on the sly. Microsoft has teamed up with CBS, MTV Networks, Paramount Pictures, Tuner Broadcasting and Warner Brothers to digitally deliver TV shows and movies through the Xbox 360.
Beginning November 22 (the anniversary of the launch of the Xbox 360), owners of the system will have access to high-definition TV shows that can be downloaded to own, and movies that are downloaded to rent through the Xbox Live network. This will include TV shows such as "CSI," "Jericho," and the remastered "Star Trek," as well as movies, including "Mission Impossible III," "Batman Begins" and "The Matrix."
Pricing for the downloads hasn't been announced yet, but GameDaily is reporting a rumored price of around $4 for rentals. Movies can be downloaded, with 14 days to begin watching, and 24 hours to watch as much as you like once you've hit play. So far there are no plans to actually own the movies indefinitely, but no doubt that's why Microsoft is betting on their upcoming HD-DVD drive for those of us who actually like to "own" what we pay for!

There must be bricks flying around office sites hitting all those execs in the head. I love xbox, however, I don't own one and will not until the Digital Rights Mess is cleared-up. There is no way that I am going to pay to look at a show and give it back! Call me cheap, but don't call me stupid! I'm worshipping the same "Dead President" (dollar) that you guys worship, and mine come to hard to mindlessly give them away. Instead of paying for a show that I don't own--how about watching it on free TV like the rest of John Q Public and save my dollar! It kills me that you guys are wrangling over DRM schemes and what not. I'll never own an $8k or even $1k television, not because I don't have the dollar for it, but because I don't think there's a television made that's worth it! Forget all the hype and get a grip! No! Get a Good Grip!
