This is the way things are supposed to work. I took Verizon Wireless' new V640 EVDO ExpressCard down to the Apple Store in SoHo, installed the drivers from the included CD, and popped it into a MacBook Pro. Within a few seconds, I had high-speed, go-anywhere Internet access, completely integrated into Mac OS 10.4.7 - check out the photo at left. (Click on it for a bigger image.) A reception indicator appears in the MacBook Pro's task bar; you pop a menu down to connect, and then you're online. It couldn't be easier. Look for my full review of the V640 card next week on PCMag.com.

Almost too easy is right, but I'm glad to hear anything that has the words "too" and "easy" in them. The last thing I need is something horrifically complicated, especially when it comes to getting connected when you're on the go. This does again require Verizon's cellular access plan, correct? Isn't it something like another 80 USD per month for service?

Hi, Does anyone know, is there an external option for MacBooks without the Express Card slot? Thanks!

If you had to install a driver, I wouldn't say it was the true Mac experience. I have Sprint EVDO with a Merlin S620 card. With OS X 10.4.7 it works out of th box (no driver install). Still, glad your install was relatively painless. One word of warning.. Verizon is infamous for cancelling EVDO customers who use significantly more bandwidth than the rest. Read dozens of testimonials here at this discussion forum: VERIZON TERMINATED MY SERVICE http://www.evdoforums.com/about2366.html The guys who run this site are very helpful. They sell both Sprint and Verizon EVDO equipment and antennas. They can activate EVDO cards for you before you plug it into your Mac (needed for sure for Sprint).

Wow, too easy? Maybe too easy but definately too late!!!! Been using evdo on a sony for 2 years now.

Wowee, This isn't the first EVDO on the Mac, it's the first use of the new ExpressCard format, a card that was just released. Mac users have been using EVDO and other 3G over PC card for years too.

This thread is talking about the new EVDO cards that fit into MacBook Pros. Most of us have been using EVDO on our older Macs for years, like you. This is all about the new Expresscard/34 format.

Cool that the Apple store worked with you on this even though Apple wouldn't send a computer. Though sometimes they're too friendly - the store by me lets yuppie bohemians wander in with their dogs. Yuck.

Does anybody know how to hook up a new MacBook Pro to work with Cingular? I am about to purchase one to use for work and I need anywhere internet. I don't really care if it is Epress 3/4 or external.

Zatz, the Apple Store has helped me out several times when we haven't had any MacBook Pros in inventory. If it helps, Apple's lending policies can be prety tight - *I* can't get a MacBook Pro right now. Bruce, there are no Cingular ExpressCards yet. So your best bet is to hook up via Bluetooth with a Cingular phone. For best performance and future-proofing, I suggest the new LG CU500, which will let you access Cingular's high-speed network as it rolls out. This is a great little device that has been certified to work with the Sprint/Nextel Network. If you have a USB port available, you too can be downloading at EVDO speeds!!!

Victor is referring to a USB EVDO device from Franklin. I've discussed that with Sprint and I can't figure out anywhere you can actually buy it - apparently you have to have a business account and buy it through your Sprint business rep. I'm in touch with Sprint in an ongoing manner about when/whether consumers will be able to get hold of it - if anyone sees it out for sale on the open market, please tell me.

The Franklin USB devices can be purchased with or without Sprint service here: http://booster-antenna.com/ Usage discussions and support forum here: http://www.evdoforums.com/forum-20.html Booster-Antenna.com has great deals on Verizon's V640 too!

They couldn't figure out how to capture a screenshot in OSX! ;)

Is there a wireless verizon card for the new MacBook non-pro? It doesn't have any card slots on it....just wondering what can be used there. Thanks

I had a digital camera easily on hand. I didn't have a flash drive and didn't feel like entering my e-mail password on a public computer at the Apple Store. What's the grief? Skip, you can connect to the Veriaon EV-DO network by using a USB connection to an EV-DO phone such as the LG VX8300, LG VX8500, LG VX9800, or Motorola V3m. Sprint has told me that the Franklin device is not available to consumers, which makes me really uneasy about some Web store claiming to sell it (and they don't even have it yet!) I'll wait until it's available through more official channels before reviewing or recommending it.

Sprint may tell you that they are not available to consumers - but they will be in a few more days. The Franklin EVDO USB modems will not be available directly from Sprint - but that doesn't mean they won't be available. We are getting in 160 units for sale to consumers are we will start shipping them on Monda 8/21/2006. We will take a picture of all 160 before we start shipping them. FYI, call Frankling (not Sprint) and ask where consumers can purchase them (soon), and they will tell you: http://www.EVDOinfo.com

Evaluating this for mobile computing initiatives. Have been using it on the Virginia Express Rail (VRE) every morning to and from DC (65 min ea way). The software update from Apple this week helped with stability. Experienced multiple kernel panics previous to 1.1 update from Apple. Like the menu implementation shown but would have preferred it to be integrated into the Internet Connect and no separate menu of its own. This also does some strange things with pre-loaded Network settings and re-inserting them with card insertion. Items inserted cannot be edited via GUI. I might not want my config named "Novatel Wireless EXPD CDMA" but cannot change it. Minor irritation. On occasion card cannot be turned off. Other occasions cannot successfully disconnect from network. Prematurely pulling the card causes the menu graphic to corrupt and sometimes takes out right side of the menu bar. Re-insertion does not fix, only rebooting. As I am testing, did *not* load the SmithMicro software previous to usage. Will load during second phase after issues with the "Novatel Wireless EXPD CDMA" drivers are resolved. Have achieved sustained 933Kb/s download. Today I watched the live "LandWarNet" Conf stream from Ft. Lauderdale by the Army Homepage team from Army Knowledge Online (AKO)... while riding the commuter train. Some Sierra Hotel!

Has anyone gotten the Express card (Verizon or Sprint) to work in Windows XP on a Macbook Pro? I would imagine that it would work but for my sanity... before I make a commitment... has anyone gotten it to work?

We don't get the "menu implementation " shown and I was wondering how that's accomplished on the MacBook. We have to use the VZManager to connect/disconnect and we'd rather not. The icon just doesn't show up in the menu. I have the old sprint card on a Powerbook and the 3G EVDO menu just pops up.

Since OS X 10.4.7 Apple has been natively supporting some EVDO cards such as the 640 discussed here. If your EVDO card is one of them, all you need to do is make sure you have 10.4.7 or greater (10.4.8 as I write this) and uninstall the VZW software so Apple's internal software will take over and you should get the new EVDO system menu (and better performance to boot.) Here are the cards I know about that Apple natively supports now: Novatel 620 (Verizon V620 & Merlin S620) Novatel V640 (Verizon ExpressCard) Sierra AirCard 580 (Verizon and Sprint) Sierra PC5220 (Verizon - new and old firmware supported) Support was also added for the Novatel U730
