solfull.jpgI can't decide whether Weird Al Yankovic's "Don't Download this Song" is a desperate bid for relevance from an aging rocker who is hopelessly out-of-fashion or just plain old fun.  Of course, Weird Al was always hopelessly out-of-fashion, that is what made him strangely appealing.  Compared to some of Al's psuedo-hits, the song itself is nothing special, but it is worth a  quick listen. You can do so here, free of charge or DRM restrictions. Best line:

'[It] doesn't matter if you're a grandma or a seven year old girl,

They'll treat you like the evil hardened criminal scum that you are.'

I just downloaded.... errr... listened to this song and its pretty good (in a typical Wierd Al sort of fasion). I like the way he made it sound like "Live Aid" or one of those "save the world" music industry sponsored/mandated/generated orchestrations. Not as good as "Amish Paradise", but fun nonetheless. Thanks for the post. I'll add it to my collection..... Uh, I mean, I'll go out and buy the CD right now! ;-)

Man, this is actually a good song. The parody is great, especially when you consider that Wierd Al, stole, I mean borrowed, the music from so many artists. Ok, I know it's a parody, legitimately so. So...who am I to argue with the Supreme Court.

If you like that go to weirdal.com and get "You're Pitiful." It is a parody of James Blunt's "You're Beautiful." "You're half undressed. Eating chips off your chest and playing Halo too."

JAW wrote: "I know it's a parody, legitimately so." DDTS is not a parody, just to clear that up. It's an original song, but Al parodied the style of songs like the Live Aid thing, We Are The World and Hands Across America. He didn't steal the music, he copied the style, and besides, all music is derivative anyway. If you want to hear a REAL parody get the new album and listen to 'White and Nerdy', parody of Chamillionaire's 'Ridin''...from what I've heard it's going to be very awesome. And about the supreme court thing, Al gets the artists permission and pays royalties, so how is it 'stealing'?

I just love DDTS! Al's music never fails to entertain me and lift my spirits which is why I've been a fan all my life and will buy his music and go to his shows as long as he continues in the business. I can't wait for his next tour to start for "Straight Outta Lynwood". Geez! Lighten up, will ya?

Mridalmn - I just listened to "You're Pitiful." OMG it's so freakin hilarious!!! I love the beginning too, when he's like, "oh sorry, did I start too early? Should we do it again?" Weird Al is definitely classic!!!!!

Dan, Thanks for turning me onto the new Weird Al song! Are you sure he's an aging rocker? In the pic, he looks like he's barely out of high school. Ron

Like I said, jealous much? Al rattled your cage because once again, he's gonna be hugely popular for making people laugh the way you could only dream of? Thought as much. You need to sit down, relax, drink some camomile tea and listen to the soothing sounds of Albuquerque while you eagerly await Al's soon-to-be-release Straight Outta Lynwood.

Aging rocker? Weird Al is 46. He's been doing his thing since '79, but seriously, how old are the Rolling Stones? Or the Who? Billy Joel is in his late 50's and can't even sing worth a damn anymore, yet he still plops his expanding ass on stage and plays piano because he knows we all still love his music and he can still make a buck doing it. Furthermore, while those guys live off their past successes (seriously, I went to see Bon Jovi over the summer and no one really even reacted to his new stuff) Al tries to keep himself contemporary and fresh every 3 years or so, and does a damn fine job IMHO.

In my opinion, Weird Al is an amazing talent. As Jon Z said, he's been skewering popular music for almost 30 years. That's a long stinkin' time in the music biz. His send-ups of Michael Jackson (remember when he spent more time in the studio than in court?), Madonna, and the B-52's are classic 80's. "Ode to a Super Hero" blends 70's Billy Joel with Spiderman. Rap, grunge, polkas, 00's pop -- he's done it all. The funny thing is, some of his parodies are *better* than the original songs. "Don't Download This Song" is more subtle than most of his efforts, but he manages to poke fun at "We Are the World"-type benefit songs, the RIAA, and downloader's self-justifications (piracy is keeping him from buying "another solid gold humvee") -- all at once. Weird Al will probably be recording from the rest home in 30 more years, and I'll be listening in mine.
