GodzillatronThe Godzillatron has landed in Austin, Texas. No, it's not Godzilla's father. The Godzillatron is a 55-ft tall and 134-ft wide scoreboard with a 2064 x 848 resolution erected at the Darrell K. Royal Texas Memorial Stadium, home of the college football team Longhorns.

It's just about as wide as the field itself and is currently "the largest high-definition video display board in the world." Constructed by Daktronics, Inc for $8 million, the new scoreboard will debut on September 2 at 11 a.m. when Texas plays North Texas.

Because of its 134-ft wide screen, local gamers wanted to hook an Xbox up to it. Madden anyone?

So what's the power behind the scoreboard? For starters, the university had to "upgrade its utilities capacity to supply the board with enough juice. Whether it's a typical 100-degree Texas afternoon or the heat generated by the board itself, both will damage the board over time. UT officials had to install 40 5-ton air conditioning units."

Who knows...maybe on nights when there isn't a game the stadium will host Movie Under The Stars night?

Thanks to PC Mag Features Editor Dan Evans for the tip!

dust_delte_data_detection.jpg

We got to talking about Canon's dust reduction technology on last week's Gearlog Radio. The technology is used on the Rebel XT and Rebel XTi, which was announced last week. Terry did a pretty good job of explaining how it works, but a picture is worth a thousand words.

Better still, download the video at YouTube. It pretty much says it all.

Outdoor Laptop ChairLabor Day is celebrated in many ways: picnics, barbecues, fireworks, shopping sales, and street markets. It's also the last weekend of freedom for many high school graduates going on to college. If you're hosting a Labor Day party this weekend, follow our tips for the best gadgets and gear.

First, you'll need to prepare your backyard. That means mowing the lawn, setting up chairs and tables, and getting rid of those pesky bugs. But here's how you can cut your work in half. The RoboMower ($1,195.99) cuts your lawn automatically using no gas, oil, or emissions. Just press the Go button and let the RoboMower do its job. Have to bring the office home with you despite the holiday? Well, you can still spend time with your loved ones with the Portable Outdoor Laptop Chair ($39.95). This collapsible chair and ottoman includes a laptop tray that slips over the mesh arms for books or a laptop, and side pockets to hold your laptop when not in use. And of course you don't want those pesky gnats getting in to your guests' drinks, so the Rechargeable Bug Zapper Lantern with LED light ($39.99) should do the trick. It switches from a 12-LED lantern to a bug zapper with an LCD display that shows the time, date and current temperature.

LED Cutlery SetNext, set the table with paper plates, cups, napkins and silverware. But don't use just any ordinary cutlery set. If you're dining in the dark, use this LED Light Up Cutlery Set ($3-$4 per set). Each set comes with a glowing Red LED Spoon, a glowing Blue LED Knife and a glowing Green LED Fork! Just press the button to start the lights and change between the three different light settings.

When it's cooking time, make sure you own these two BBQ essentials: the Grillslinger Barbecue Tool System ($99), a belt holster that can hold tongs, grill knife, spatula, BBQ sauce, etc.; and the Wireless Remote Cooking Thermometer ($49.95) that tells you in an automated voice when your food is done.

Of course you'll need drinks to go with your meal. For yummy margaritas or mixed drinks, you won't have to keep running in and out of the house to use the blender with the $49.99 Cabela Rechargeable Blender. It has a 10,000-rpm motor and both a 12-volt and 110-volt power cord. But if beer is more your drinking style, your friends will get a kick out of the Simpsons Talking Bottle Opener ($8.95).

Hog Wild Motorized Ice Cream ConeAnd before you know it, it's time for dessert. The Hog Wild Motorized Ice Cream Cone ($9.95) will help your kids eat an ice cream cone without the mess. No more licking around the edges! Just load the removable dish with ice cream, push the button and the ice cream turns.

Chances are, you and your buddies will be winding down the night by watching football. Practice being the quarterback during half-time with the Automatic Quarterback ($69.95). This machine sends a foam football up to 30 yards, and adjusts between lateral passes and high throws.

Gearlog wishes you a Happy Labor Day!!
