PCMag.com reported yesterday that Dell is significantly reducing its rebates program. Sad as that may sound, though, Dell insists that customers drove this decision; they want to pay the actual price when they buy their merchandise without having to jump through rebate hoops. Ro Parra, Dell senior vice president and general manager of the home and small business group, said: "What we're really doing is making it simpler for customers to understand the ultimate price they will pay for computers. What we're basically saying is that rather than trying to promote mail-in rebates, over time, we will lower a list price and the rate of promotion will be reduced. Ultimately the customer will get the same value." Hallelujah to that.

Forgive me, but I'm going to have to repost this news. Personally I've hated Dell rebates for a long time, and while I'm normally a rebate lover (except when it comes time to keep track of it and make sure the company doesn't completely shaft you-and I do, too-I'm that guy who keeps copies of all of his forms and his UPC and everything so he can call when they fail to honor his rebate in the time allotted, and I've called many companies, Western Digital, Staples, Logitech...they all pony up in the end!) I'm glad to hear this. I'm hoping they'll just absorb the discounts that the rebates would have offered into their regular prices, offering even lower prices, but I'm not naive enough to think they'll follow through with that completely. All I can hope for is a little more of a break on their pricing and a few more sales, and considering how much Dell sells their beautiful LCD displays for, there's no reason to complain about that!

This is the most honest approach to doing business yet, from a true market leader. I'm tired of getting stuck with unredeemable rebates, or rebates that are "lost" and never come back. I for one will support Dell's decision of minimizing rebates the only way I know how.. by continuing to give all my business to them.

The new MacBookPro runs XP faster than most PC laptops I've benchmarked from 1 to 20% improvement. _______________________________ http://www.mysudo.com
