GoogleCheckout.gifEarlier this week Google rolled out Google Checkout, its competitor to eBay's PayPal. (Read Davis Janowski's report on new service at pcmag.com.) Google has already signed on a few notable online retailers including Buy.com and RitzCamera.com. To help Checkout get some momentum, several retailers are offering one-time use $10 off $20 coupons. I went searching at one of these stores, eCost, to see how you could combine the coupon with items that cost more than $20 before rebate to buy items for next to nothing...or even less than nothing (before shipping). Here's what I found.

Move quickly. Most of these are pretty limited quantity. Oh, and if you're one of the masses who likes burnt coffee, you can also get $10 off $20 at Starbucks.

Okay, okay, seriously though. (They have other things than coffee!) Those flash drives look nice, I have to say...I might have to snap one up. Google certainly knows how to launch a new service if they're doing it this way!

I was interested in the flash drives, but when I clicked on them, they were $10 more than the price you listed ($7, $7, and $10). Was the price changed so quickly, or was this a typo error in your post?

I don't know if you didn't process an order far enough or what, but they tried to charge $22.00 shipping and handling fee for ground shipping and the price before $30 rebate was $38. I tried multiple times to charge it to google checkout, but that wouldn't work either. I guess like much of their items, it is just a scam to get you to buy the higher cost items.

I just tried all the links and the prices were still valid. I entered the ecost10off code and it worked, but I canceled the checkout. Then I entered it again and it didn't. I'm not sure if you can only enter the code once whether or not you finish checkout, or whether the system is just flaky. I did note that the prices are before shipping. eCost is a little pricey on shipping but it was always less than $9.00 --Ben

I read my email and decided to purchase this SD card from Ecost.com using Google Checkout. I did not see any coupon code in the Cheap Geek section until reading this reply list and seeing "ecost10off". I attempted to input this code into the coupon code box and it said "invalid coupon". I then tried "google10" and "google10off" and those didn't work. Any help anyone would be able to offer regarding this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I don't know where you found a $10 off coupon. I coundn't find any discount information, so I called eCost and was told that none exists. What gives?

E-Cost does not accept the $10.00 coupon you wrote about at all.

This is very frustrating. I called and asked Ecost and they said to email google. Then Google tells me to check out ecost's page for the coupon offer, and there is NOTHING there- it just takes me to the ecost main site. Ben, is there anything you can do about this? Thanks.186RQ9

Ben, I think you should have done a BIT more research. Ecost IS participating in Google checkout, but does NOT offer $10 off $20 purchase. Very frustrating for all of us!

As I note above, I was able to get the $10 off coupon to work on multiple occasions. But it also failed to work on other tries. My guess is that eCost was overwhelmed with people using the coupon and decided to withdraw it. You'll note that other bargain sites also reported this deal: http://www.slickdeals.net/#p7721 and www.techbargains.com (search for the phrase ecost10off). --Ben

I agree with you Julie. This is VERY frustrating, as the $2 back to me (with the extra $10 coupon code) is one of the major reasons why I signed up for Google Checkout after reading my email. Hopefully I'll get my extra $10 back. Thanks again Ben.

What is it with you people? Ben is doing a great service and a great job that we either don't have the time or the ability to do. So some of it does not work as advertised. Big Deal. If that is such a problem go do all the research yourself. I doubt Ben is getting rich off of this. Ben you have my appreciation and I am sure that of most of your readers. Keep up the good work. Thanks Dennis aka hedo59@hotmail.com
