rearview speakerphone.gifWhat do you get when you combine your cell phone, Bluetooth, and your car's rearview mirror? Hammacher Schlemmer's Rearview Mirror Wireless Bluetooth Speakerphone. The speakerphone mounts to your rearview mirror and includes a cordless earpiece, and it connects to any Bluetooth-enabled phone.

When a call comes in, it is directed to the speakerphone, and caller ID appears in special LEDs that you can put on your mirror. If you prefer the in-ear headpiece, just detach it, and your call is routed there. According to the product's site:

"The system uses full-duplex noise- and echo-cancellation for clear audio, and the built-in loudspeaker is able to produce powerful sound up to 120 db. The rechargeable battery provides three hours of talk time and one week of standby per charge. Includes a car charger, hands-free voice dialer, call status LEDs, and a built-in memory chip to record voice memos up to 60 seconds long."rearview speakerphone 2.gif

The system costs $139.95, but it's so popular that it's unexpectedly sold out. You'll have to be patient for this gadget, but if you want only the caller ID  (minus the speakerphone), check out this product.

Well, it looks like a pretty affordable way to add bluetooth to a car that doesn't have it or can't support it without buying an expensive head unit or a GPS nav system like a TomTom that has that built in. I'd been looking for something like this for a while (although I didn't expressly think about it being built into the rearview) but had resigned myself to having to get a new head unit with a touch-display or something similar, and this is actually cheaper than some of the solutions that cell phone providers offer themselves that involve completely reqiring the car. I kinda dig the idea!

This is an excellent idea, but I have an auto-dimming rear-view mirror and don't want to give that up, so when is that version coming out...or, perhaps they could develop an add-on unit that attaches to the bottom of the present rear-view, or hey, even better a HUD unit that puts the display info right on the windshield! (techies just don't know when to stop do they?)

I love the idea of the number showing up on the mirror and the price seems pretty low also. My only issue is with the unit having rechargable batteries instead of a direct 12v hookup. I guess the mirror could be wired direct from the charger but I need to see more pics to know if this is possible?

According to HAMMACHER SCHLEMMER & COMPANY, INC., this is a cancelled item and will not be restocked. I just got off the phone with them... bummer.
