Motorola QLet's have a little Gearlog experiment here.

I have a Motorola Q in my possession, and my review of the gadget is going online very soon. (Keep an eye on PCMag.com)  But my reviews, obviously, don't answer all the questions everyone has. So, what do you want to know? And is anyone reading this at all? (Other than you, Phoenix - I know you read everything.)

Go on, now, post comments.

This would be my first phone like this, and I'm just seeing if it's worth getting. I'm already on verizon so I just need to know if I should get this.

Hm. It looks like people have been posting questions on my other Q post, so I'll start with some answers over here. 1. The Q does work with family plans. The Q's data service is a $40 add-on to any existing voice family plan, according to Verizon's Brenda Raney. Yes, that's a lot of money. 2. The Q can't be used as a laptop modem ... yet. That capability will come very soon, Raney says. The Q is already set up for it, Verizon just needs to set up their billing systems properly. So you won't have to change anything about your Q. But using it as a modem will cost you $15/month extra. 3. For now, Verizon has an exclusive on the Q. They paid big $$$ for that. That will last for a few months. Expect it to appear on other carriers by Christmas. 4. Smartphone *is* a "full" version of Windows Mobile, it's just a different version than Pocket PC. I think the lack of a touchscreen gave MS some discipline and made the Q an unusually good one handed device. Why all the smartphone hating? 5. Basically, Wi-Fi is for connecting to the Internet. Bluetooth is for connecting to other gadgets you own like headphones, PCs, etc. That's a bit simplistic and there are exceptions to both, but that's the basic layout. The Q uses Verizon's cellular EVDO network, not Wi-Fi, to connect to the Internet.

Different websites, and different Verizon people that I have talked to, (kiosks, brick stores, and *611) all give different dates as to when the Q will "actually" be available to customers, and none of them can answer an important question,.... HOW MUCH IS THE PHONE???? .... anyway... Love the gearlog ... heard about from .. I believe a video podcast of DLTV. Thanks......

How does the Q stack up to the Treo 700 p? Specifically; speed and stability of the OS, network costs (The Treo from VZ seems to be $200 more than the Q, and not as cool), phone quality, ease of use, and any key feature differences.

The stack of press releases I'm holding here all say May 31, 2006 for sale through Verizon's Web site. The phone will be $199 with a two-year contract ($299 minus $100 "instant savings") and $419 for existing subscribers with no contract extension. As for the Q/Treo comparison, wait for my review tomorrow. It's tough to talk stability when I've only had the gadgets for a few days, but superficially the Treo seems more stable. The pricing plans are the same with Verizon, but the Treo on Sprint is cheaper. The Q is a better phone. Both are a lot of fun to use, but some people like Palm and some people like Microsoft; Palm OS is probably easier for people who haven't had a smartphone before. The Treo has a higher-res screen and seems to be better with playing video. The Treo comes with software to edit MS Office documents; the Q just comes with a viewer. The Q has stereo Bluetooth audio.

Hi.... Is the Q running WM5 with AKU2 (for http push email via exchange)??

I know that there is a slot for MiniSD, some reports state that they will only allow data cards to go into this slot and not MiniSD WiFi cards. If we could add WiFi to this device it might actually be a BBerry killer.

I was wondering about this for a long time and just wanted to know for sure. Since this phone is running in landscape mode constantly due to the way of the screen is, do all smartphone apps work correctly on the phone? Or are there times where the bottom portion of apps are cut off? Since most phones with qvga screens with smartphone wm5 are in portrait mode wouldn't certain apps look alil differently on a landscape smartphone version of wm5??

Thanks for taking questions Sascha. Have you had a chance to document real world battery life? Instead of comparing to the 700p, how about the 700w? ...in terms of stability and responsiveness, given the Treo is a PPC. Does the Q come with any sort of plastic belt clip dock like a Blackberry? I'm so very attracted to this phone... They've definitely priced it agressively. BUT Verizon charges the highest data rates, yet doesn't include laptop tethering. I'm also attracted to Windows in mobile devices as a means of watching my Slingbox (or at least showing off to my friends and colleagues).

OK, some of these answers will have to wait for tomorrow when I get back to the office where I have more ... stuff. AKU2: Soon But Not Now. Moto and Microsoft reps said it will be available as a free upgrade later this year. MiniSD Wi-Fi: It's possible, there just isn't one yet. Motorola's Jason Gordon said there's nothing about the Mini-SD slot *stopping* a Wi-Fi card, but no one has written drivers or made a card available yet. I wouldn't buy the device if I'm 100% counting on Wi-Fi. Smartphone apps: So far I've had better luck with the 320x240 landscape than with, say, 240x240 square screens. Nothing's been cut off yet, though tomorrow I'll install some more apps. Zatz: The problem there is that right now I have a 700p but not a 700w. In terms of talk time all three devices come out VERY close to one another. The Q seems to have a bit less "PDA time" than the 700p, at least. Laptop tethering will come soon for $15 extra. You want the VZ, you pay the VZ. So is life.

Thanks for answering the questions! Anyways, I have a Moto v710 right now, and I'm experiencing what I've been told are common problems with motorola phones; black screens/crashes, reception, and some overall poor performance. I'm assuming that the "crashes" would not show up because this phone is running Windows, but overall, have you had ANY crashes/problems/issues with the phone and its normal operation?

OK, my review is up, go look at the PCMag.com homepage. The Sling client for Smartphone isn't out yet. I have a pre-release beta, but I'm having some trouble setting it up. I'll tell you when I get it working, but still, I don't want to draw conclusions about what is indeed a pre-release beta. If Sling is your primary app, though, I'd go with something like the Sprint PPC-6700 - lots of processor and both EVDO and Wi-Fi. The calendar is fine. Works just like every other pocket Microsoft product. Syncs with Outlook just fine. Palm guy - you'd have to export your stuff from Palm Desktop and reimport it into Outlook, which is doable, and then you'd be able to use the Q. Phone sound quality is just plain awesome. It *is* a little treblier than the E815 but it's up in the very top rank of phones. It's extremely difficult to compete with the E815, which is Best Verizon Phone Ever. But the Q is damn good. I find typing on a keyboard much easier than struggling with handwriting recognition. But different strokes (literally) for different folks. It's too soon for me to talk in great depth about real world battery life or long term stability. I've only had the gadget for a few days. But yes, it has crashed - mostly involving The Core Pocket Media Player.

Hi Sascha, A few very important question I have on the Q and that's real world Battery life. What is the best and worst battery times you have seen with the Q. How is the phone sound quality? I have yet to find a device that sounds better than my Moto V710 and E815. I was extremely disappointed with the XV6700 sound and I went back to my E815. I have A-B'd my E815 to the RAZR V3c and the 815 still wins in sound quality. My fear is that the Q has the same audio processing of the V3c with shallow digital-like sound. The E815 has a warmer more natural analog sound. Thanks, --NJTG

It doesn't have a touchscreen, which means no transcriber, so no composing long notes or emails. Using the tiny keyboard is good for about 5 lines of text. After that it is too time consuming and slow. And viewers only for documents is useless. How can microsoft put out a product that doesn't have "full" versions of their own software? Oh I know, they want me to buy a microsoft phone, a microsoft pda, a microsoft laptop, a microsoft media center and a microsoft computer.

Hi, I've got a Samsung i600 w/Windows Smartphone 2002 and I've been looking for a replacement for about a year. This one looks like it might be it, but what it is like having a phone that is so wide, both for how you carry it when not in use and also for how it fits next to your face. Thanks in advance.

I just broke down and bought the 6700, thinking it would be awhile before I saw the Q (guess I should have done a bit more snooping around). How does the Q stack up against the 6700? I've been pretty happy with it so far, but I'm willing to eBay it if I have to. :) Thanks for picking up the engadget thread over here, Sascha!

I have a Treo 650 and am frustrated with a few things like the long delay when answering the phone with my bluetooth headset, and no voice dialing via headset (in my humble opinion it is the dialing while driving that causes the accidents not the talking). Does the Q support voice dialing and does the voice dialing work with bluetooth? Also, is the Outlook synch through VZ-mail like the Treo or does it use other software?

Posted by: Carl Eastlake
May 25, 2006 2:41 PM

It's very hard to review in a practical sense, but as built-in handsfree Bluetooth systems are appearing in more and more cars, it's becoming painfully apparent that the actual OS sub-version in any given phone - and worse, the restrictions imposed by carriers, (Verizon for example declines to even provide tech support for connectivity to cars) - seem to almost randomly effect what functions, if any, will work with a given car. Given the legal and safety considerations - some states mandating hands-free use - it's irresponsible that the major carriers, auto makers and phone makers haven't solved what should be a simple problem of setting industry standards. In the meantime, as far as possible, it would be nice if they were pressured by smartphone reviews at least mentioning the issue and testing for it as much as is practical. For that matter, an article on which makers and which carriers do the best job in supporting connectivity in cars would be a really useful, interesting feature piece. Hint, hint...

How would you compare the Q to the PC6700? What would be the major pros and cons for each if comparing the two.

Posted by: ssegan
May 25, 2006 3:20 PM

Carl - I don't even own a car, so I don't test car connectivity, and you're right -- it basically has to be tested in every car individually. I'd say, go to our site technoride.com and also go to qusers.com, and try to start a thread on their forums where lots of people chime in about the models of cars they have. Voice dialing - Yes! You can voice dial through Bluetooth! It's VoiceSignal speaker independent voice dialing, which is in my eyes the cream of the crop. There is a bit of a Bluetooth 'transfer delay' when kicking into the headset - you notice it in Windows Media Player, too - but nothing too bothersome. Outlook syncing - The Q uses ActiveSync to connect directly to your PC and get information from Outlook that way; it can also connect to an Exchange server over the air, if it's a recent-model Exchange server. So you don't need to use Verizon's Wireless Sync if you have an Exchange server to sync to, or you're willing to sync via cable to your desktop. Was that what you needed to know there? Width - Yes, it's wide. It's quite wide. But the thinness makes up for it to some extent. Still, this is really one of those personal-taste questions, where I just have to say, go to a Verizon store and see how it fits your taste. Vs. XV6700 - Oh, that's a toughie. The XV6700 -is- more powerful. It's faster, it has Wi-Fi (especially if you hack it), and it pleases people like Mark because you can write on the screen. It's more of a pocket-computer experience. Also, I trust the VX6700 for video, and not the Q yet (though Microsoft is now trying to fix my video-stuttering bug, and that may not apply to all Qs.) But I'd call the Q better as a phone, email and music device. I'd say, are you comfortable with the somewhat significant size of the XV6700? Then stick with what you like.

Sascha, Thanks for this experiment. I'd say it worked pretty well, and I appreciate your intelligent answers. Nice review of the "Q" too. Do you know if VZ forces you onto the data plan? I have a V710, and I pay $5/mo for Internet access, including using the phone as a modem on the 1X network. Won't VZ let me just keep that plan, or do I have to go to the $40/mo smartphone plan, which I assume is EV-DO? Also, does the Q accept a cable (either the one for the RAZR or, preferably, the one I have for the V710) instead of BT? I find you can often use a cable connection and use the phone as a modem. Thanks Again!

Posted by: ssegan
May 26, 2006 5:59 AM

ajr - Official Verizon script is that the Q will only be sold with unlimited data, which is $40/month. While it might be possible to find, say, an indirect retailer who would sell it to you without a data plan, DO NOT BUY IT WITHOUT A DATA PLAN. You would get socked with huge KB charges for every accidental touch of the Internet on a gadget that really likes to touch the Internet, and you'd also be socked with KB charges for MMS - and that means up to $5 per picture message. If you just want a disconnected PDA, get a Motorola E815 phone and a Palm Z22. If you want a PDA that connects to the Internet without Verizon, get a Moto E815 phone and a Palm TX or Dell Axim. Verizon will have NO pity on you over the KB charges on a device like this one. The Q does use a USB cable to connect to PCs, but the device is locked out of being used as a PC modem for now. That will change when Verizon (soon) puts it on the BroadbandAccess Connect device list, but they will charge an additional $15/month for the privilege.

Sascha, Thanks for the reviews; they're always a good read. I use a PowerMac and Windows laptop but am being pulled in two different directions here with the release of the Q and Treo 700p. It seems like the Q is not only sexier but also better as a phone in terms of quality. As someone who likes to be be able to 'do it all' (mp3's, slingbox, email, phone, documents) would you recommend the Q or 700p? What device do you personally prefer? Would one seem superior to the other?

May 26, 2006 9:07 PM

Trying to decide if I am going to buy a Treo 700p from Verizon who I belong to now or Sprint because their data plan is cheaper. But then I found out the Q was coming out and for $200 less, I am interested in getting it. Not happy that it will only be read only for Microsoft Office docs and I wouldn't be able to sync to my Mac until MarkSpace develops it's third party software for WM5. What would your thoughts and advice be. Thanks. Jason

Posted by: ssegan
May 27, 2006 8:01 AM

Q vs. Treo 700p: some thoughts. There's no Slingbox client at all for the PalmOS, and now that Sling yesterday released their smartphone client, the Q is one of their recommended devices. So if you want to use Sling, for now, you have to go Q. On the other hand, if you have a Mac, you want to go Treo 700p. As MarkSpace and PocketMac are still both working on their WM5 versions, right now there is no way to sync a Q to a Mac. The lack of MS Office document editors (as opposed to viewers) on Smartphone is one reason the 700p keeps the Editor's Choice rubric. The Q is a better voice phone. Tough decision, innit? Yes, you have to decide between document editing and Sling -- or go with the XV6700/PPC6700, which has it all but is a bit more brick-like. Re: the call recorder - there's a product called Vito Audio Notes from vitotechnology.com that is supposed to do this, but I can't get the call recording function to work properly. If that's a critical feature for you, I'd suggest emailing them from their Web site and seeing when they'll have a version compatible with the Q. It looks like only minor tweaks would be necessary.

Thanks for all the great tips. I read both your reviews on pcmag.com. This is my first time getting a smartphone, forgot to mention that. I figured if I went for the 700p, I would switch to Sprint to save some money on the data plan. If I stay with Verizon, I have america's choice voice plan with a second phone for $59.99 a month. I would have to add the $40 charge to the date plan for either the Q or the Treo. If I switch to Sprint to activate a voice plan is $29.99 plus the $15 for unlimited data, it almost works as the same price. Although Sprints TV on powervision is enticing. But from what I gather on the Treo, video is blocky. I have never had Sprint so is it worth the switch? My other worry is Palm's commitment to their OS and OS 6 ever coming out. Although I'd rather sync to my Mac, if WM5 is a better OS, than I can sync to my work pc if I have to. Also, what is Slingbox? Like I said, first time smartphone buyer.

Why is it so hard to get straight answers about WM5.0, MSFP and devices with AKU2??? I am a systems engineer working with a hosting company and we've been getting slammed with questions about supported devices for Exchange push email. This device is new (and slick) so people are freaking and geeking over how WE are going to support this.... they all think they can drop Goodlink (which STILL kicks ASS) to save our $15/month fee) and go for free with Activesync. You reviews are fantastic and we breached the subject of AKU2 to allow push email natively, but is there any real world dates connected to this? I'm actually prepping to purchase my own device (yes, supported everything for years without every holding one in my hand). I am forced to getting WM 5 device, so I'm leaning towards this Q but I'm also going to be the go-to guy for WM5 / push email support... Personally, if I get the Q I'm going with Goodlink anyway. But, I imagine some hard resets down the line to test activesync as well. Anyone have ANY detailes on AKU2 rom release for this? And, why even release it without it if they are targeting corporate as well? Thanks for great info!

Sascha, some food for thought: 1. Can you try skype on it? Presume it doesnt come with a client. So can you try it with soonr.com? and tell us abt voice quality etc? 2. Would you advice buying data only? Or voice only? On either can we get the $199 deal? Can wifi thru the spectec mini sd wifi card substitute for evdo? 3. Can you email and hear .wav files? i.e. can voice notes be emailed? 4. Does voice dialing work thru any BT headset? 5. Hows the email? Is it push out of the box or does one have to buy something additional and if so, which app would you suggest? 6. Can one use it for projecting PPTs thru a VGA projector onto a screen? grateful for your time.

Was just on the Sprint site and if you go to order a 700p online, the price is $429.99 as opposed to the stated $399.99. Verizon wireless has theirs listed at the quoted $399.99 price.

Posted by: ssegan
May 28, 2006 10:40 AM

And today's answers ... :) Sprint told me $399.99 in an e-mail on May 16. I can ask them about that on Tuesday. However, I would not be shocked if they decided to change something at the last minute. Re: AKU2, welcome to the FRUSTRATING life of dealing with wireless carriers. The problem is that it's up to the carriers to decide when/how AKU2 is deployed, and carriers are incredibly paranoid organizations that don't want to telegraph any moves in advance because of competitive fears, enterprise customer planning be damned. AKU2 will come, it will be free, and it will be later this year. That's all I can get on the record. There are Web sites where carrier employees might leak inside information I'm not privy to, but this isn't one of them. Re: email - that AKU2 upgrade I just described will give the Q a truly Blackberry-like experience with Exchange 2003 SP2 servers ... or that's what it says on the box, at least. Until then, if you want a Blackberry-like experience, you have to use Goodlink - search for "hosted Goodlink server" on Google to see some service options. Goodlink is pretty great. Ziff Davis execs use it for their business email and trust me, Louderback and Miller are demanding customers. If you're looking for an email only device for an individual, though, Blackberries will still provide a cleaner and easier experience - the Blackberry Web Client is unmatched in terms of ability to integrate various email accounts from different places. Slingbox is a gadget that lets you watch your TV remotely through the Internet on a handheld device. It's a cult thing. Search pcmag.com for the review and all will be revealed. Louderback has one. And more ...

Vatsa's hardcore geek questions - I haven't tried Skype but personally, I've never had a good experience with Skype on a mobile device. Yes, I know other peoples' mileage varies but I can't recommend that product in good conscience until I've had it work for me. Davis Janowski may have a very different opinion, but he's the Skype fanatic around here. // DO NOT BUY THIS DEVICE WITHOUT A DATA PLAN unless you want Verizon to suck the lifeblood out of you on "surprise" KB charges. They will have no pity on you. Can I repeat? DO NOT BUY THIS WITHOUT A DATA PLAN. No voice plan? Fine. But D.N.B.T.W.A.D.P.!!!!!! My view? If you can't pay for the full monty, just get a Palm TX and a Motorola E815. Convergence is what the Q/Treo are all about, and having both voice and data service is a critical part of that convergence. // Yes, the media player handles WAV files. // I've voice dialed through three headsets without problems. // It's old school Pocket Outlook "pull" email, or Verizon's painful Wireless Sync, or the very nice Goodlink enterprise solution. If you want true push, go Goodlink. // There's no video out so I have no idea how you'd hook this up to a projector, but that doesn't mean there isn't a third party solution (maybe via the mini-SD slot?) that I don't know about. Treo vs Q - Switching to Sprint is all about their coverage where you work, live, and travel - talk to friends and business associates. But don't listen to anyone who left Sprint more than a year ago, because they've been "sprinting" ahead with coverage in the past year. Still, though, Verizon does rock the casbah on coverage, especially in the Northeast, which is why they feel they can charge more. The Treo IS probably less buggy, more responsive, better if you can afford it. The Q is a better voice phone, cheaper, cuter. That's your dilemma ... !

Can one activate the Q on the sprint?not officially but thru esn number etc. 2. can good work without a server edition? if not, for individuals, which email solution would you recommend? would snapper or versamail etc work with the wm5? 3. you missed one of my Qs: one on wifi being a substitute for data and whether this will be real battery drainer? 4. do u know of any mini sd ppt accessory? 5. can the voice notes be SMSed? wont bug you after this, i promise!!

The Q is said to have only only a 3-4 hour battery life; a little more with the extra capacity battery. This is not a practical replacement for a Blackberry, which has many more hours of battery life. It certainly is not practical for business.

Posted by: ssegan
May 28, 2006 7:26 PM

Robin - The Q has about the same battery life as a Treo. The Treo is quite popular. Both run for far less time than the old school Blackberries like the 72xx/75xx/77xx series, but many folks consider that a price they're willing to pay for bright color screens, document readers, media players et al. The new 87xx series Blackberries have shorter battery lives than the 72xx/75xx/77xx, too. Vatsa - 1. No, Sprint will not activate phones they do not sell unless you know someone willing to violate Sprint policy. 2. Goodlink (like Blackberry and Exchange) requires a server, but you can get an individual hosted server package. Snapper and Versamail are Palm OS apps, so they won't work on the Q. The Q's built in mail app works fine if you don't need push. I have it running with my IMAP account right now. Otherwise, Verizon's Wireless Sync app does push, but it can be frustrating to get working. 3. No no no no no no no. Please. If you do not buy a data plan, at some point when you're not thinking, the Q will touch the EVDO network and you will get burned on KB charges. Please do not try to get around the data plan requirement. I'm already trying to help some guys with Treo 700ws who got totally socked by Verizon with fees. I'm not saying some brilliant HowardForums genius can't do it, but I can't advise that you do it and still sleep at night. WiFi is nice but it is NOT a substitute for an EVDO plan. 4. Not off the top of my head, but if you find one, tell me. 5. Not as far as I know, but I'm pretty sure they can be MMSed or emailed. Remember that doing either of those things touches the data network!

How is WM5 to use compared to Palm OS? Do I need outlook or entourage for my contact, calendar, etc information to set up the Q? Anywhere I can read about all of WM5 features or get a tutorial of how to use before I actually by a device with it? I went to the microsoft site and they don't have much to go on. they will give up their BBs, if Qs get BB connect! and removes its camera! btw does anyone have concrete evidence abt verizon evdo vs sprint evdo? when does verizon go to evdo rev A, any schedule or cities list for that? lastly has anyone tried tethering the Q using pdanet? Or has anyone first hand reports of skype or google talk? thanks sascha for your kind and patient replies. will do as advised...

do you have any personal or second hand insight about how the Q is going to work with any medical applications - palm has always had the cornerstone on such apps but wondered if you've heard how the Q was holding up, specifically a program called Epocrates...thanks also if you had to make one statement as to why to pick the treo 700 over the Q and likewise the Q over the 700 i'd be curious

More! Answers! For you! * Verizon steadfastly refuses to give a schedule for their Rev A conversion. However, my magic wireless 8-ball says you'll start seeing the first markets in early '07. In my tests, Sprint's EVDO Rev 0 network is often faster than Verizon's with strong signal, but I suspect that's because Verizon's network is more heavily loaded and because I'm typically testing in markets where Verizon is on 850, which means they need fewer towers, which means Sprint may have more backhaul per square mile to deal with a denser set of 1900 towers. But that's all speculation. * Corporate America will not give up Blackberries until other devices have the same kind of locked-down, server-side-managed options that Blackberries do. The limited functions and server dependence of Blackberries are considered a GOOD thing by IT managers. * I don't know anything about medical apps. * Why to buy the Q: it's thin and it's a great phone. Why to buy the Treo 700: The PDA stuff is really easy to use, you can edit your Microsoft Office documents and it works with 28,000 Palm applications. * Jason Vasquez. You will need Outlook to sync with the Q, and remember, it doesn't sync at all with Macs yet. No Entourage. WM5 isn't quite as fun as the Palm OS, but you get used to it pretty quickly. For your usage set it sounds like the Q would be great for you, as long as you don't have a Mac. * Oh, and I just tried Slingplayer. Works like a charm. I'm getting frame rates between 14 and 27 fps.

...Read this on engadget recently: "The processor in this phone is an Intel Xscale at 312 Mhz... "Bulverde" Incidentally the same processor and same speed used in the Palm Treo." If this is true, can we expect a Palm OS version of this phone in the future? :: Fingers crossed ::

i am figuring (tell me if i'm wrong) that with MO, getting my email from work will like everyone has on their BB won't be an issue. but i'm a mommy too with friends that aren't geek saavy like me and use on a regular basis nasty things like AIM and yahoo and hotmail. damn me, i know, but it's true. YES, i'm in a twelve step program for the AOL thing, but will Q like AOL mail and AIM? i had already read a review saying that hotmail and yahoo would not be an issue. i know the BB Ramble IM works pretty well. will it be an outside program that will make AIM work? thanks for answering all of our questions. i'm sure we all appreciate your insight!

I realise the Q comes in 'read only' for certain file types. Do you think a 3rd party will come out with an app that will allow you to edit these?

Posted by: ssegan
May 31, 2006 9:30 AM

Document editing: Never say never. But also, never buy a gadget if you want to rely on a feature it doesn't have. So, I wouldn't buy a Q if document editing was important. Spectec stuff: Their Web site is incomprehensible, and they're difficult to get in touch with. I don't know if their cards will work with the Q, so I'm going to get some in here, test them and review them. That will answer the question. Palm OS: Okay, there are some things you CAN say "never" about. CJ: AOL Mail works fine with the built-in mail app, but remember it isn't "push" like a Blackberry - you have to hit "check mail." For AIM your program is Agile Messenger, it's terrific and supports a bunch of different IM systems. Then you should be set.

One last question?? haven't seen this anywhere.. much appreciated. 1. Do you feel that higher performance MiniSD cards would benefit with the Q for read/write speeds? Is it worth buying a faster one?

I was under the impression that there was Mobile Office software package you could buy for Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone edition so that you could edit and create word documents on the Q. Also you said something about not being able to sync with Macs. Will the MissingSync by MarkSpace for Windows Mobile 5 not take care of that problem when it is released?

Ok - I've used pda's for years, and they are always touch screens. I've never used had a pda with a scroll button. Can you give us the pro's and con's of each. Let me preface by saying I love being able to hit an item on the screen and have it 'clicked'. I also love being able to just 'hit' a date to go into it, or 'hit' a spot in my email to insert into that spot. How does the scroll work in those situations? Thx so much in advance!! Quick recap..how does touch relate to scroll: 1. Scroll vs Touch - general info 2. Click ability of touch screen 3. Entering(hit) a specific date in a 'box' calander 4. Editing txt such as emails (in the middle to edit)

I have the vx6700 and find the touch screen very difficult to use and speaker phone/ringer weak. My goal is to have a PDA and phone in one via hard sync each night when leaving the office. At some point I may go live with real time email. I have two days to figure our what to do - keep or return the vx6700 and or go with the Q. I need a phone I can use on the road (blue tooth sucks for me - big head) and allow me to read emails on the fly (not always live). thought for a first time user

Sasha - I know this has been a lot of work and believe me -- we appreciate your commitment over these past few days. I'll make this quick - I read several reviews and impressions (including yours - great job) and most of the screenshots that I've seen have naturally been of the Verizon main screen (red with white background.) I think the background that Motorola and Microsoft are showing in the stock photos are much more elegant and appealing. Is there a way to customize that screen (in terms of font, theme color?) Thanks!

I understand that Verizon Wireless has exclusivity to sell the Q, and that generally this runs for 6 months. Does that mean that retailers like Amazon.com, for example, won't offer this device until the end of the year, or does the exclusivity refer strictly to the carrier for whom the device is made? I generally find that Amazon.com and Wirefly, etc., offer better rebates if you purchase the device through them.

I heard that Verizon disabled the text to email functionality and even if you receive a text message from an email and try to "reply" back to the email you get an error message???? Why would they do this, it works on the Treo 650 for Verizon. Getting a text from email to a phone number @vtext.com and replying back to that email is extremely helpful. Is it really disabled, does it work on yours, can you text to an email address?

Have the Q for 2 days now and still learning. My gripes so far are: (1) my Outlook Notes do not sync into the phone (Outlook e-mail, contacts, calendar and tasks do, however). Is that a deliberate omission or a compromise due to memory restrictions? That bugs me because of all the tech data I kept stored on my Axim, which I was hoping not to have to carry any more. (2) No cut/copy & paste, as has been pointed out in one of the syndicated reviews. (3) the voice recognition is not as good as by Moto V710. For example, believe it or not, the phone does not recognize when I say the word "yes" in order to answer a voice prompt. I wonder if this is grounds for an exchange? (4) The Verizon store charged me the full $299 instead of $199 (even though I resigned for a 2 year agreement) because I have one year left on my current contract

I purchased Q last week. I used to have Treo 600. I have tried to synch Q to download the information on the Outlook for the past 5 days without success. I know it is not necessarily the problem of Q, but it is amazing that no one has been able to help me on this issue. I tried different patches on the web/blogs but finally called Microsoft's paid support line after unsuccessful and futile attempts by Verizon staff. After working with me for 2 hours on the phone, Microsoft support has not been able to synch my Q and Outlook using ActiveSync. It has been the most frustrating experience on "smart" phone. I hope you out there have better experience.

I have had the Q for a week and must say I am a little disappointed in the functionality / battery life. I have not been able to go 24 hours without having to recharge my phone. I do not use the phone for voice calls more than 10 / 15 minutes a day, and receive maybe 20-30 text messages. I have also configured GMAIL as a POP account and the outlook client does not retain the email. In addition, applications do not close, they just run in the background and I have to kill them off manually.

I've had the Q for a week and really like it. Before I was using an Audiovox SMT5600 that I upgraded to WM5 several months ago (pre-release build) that I have been using for over a year. What I like: Keyboard, screen, thin profile (first qwerty device I can comfortably carry in my front pocket), resolution (video files I convert to WMV format look really sharp) What I don't like: Battery life (twice I forgot to plug into the charger at night and the battery was dead and phone off in the morning), inability to reply to text messages, no flash on camera, Verizon (tendency to lock stuff down), lack of tethering via Verizon (coming soon supposedly) I haven't been unable to unlock the phone yet because the lack of an unzip utility on the phone so I am still playing around with getting regedit copied over. So far, it hasn't been that big of an issue since I have been able to install many of the apps I already own. The strange thing is that older Smartphone 2003 apps seem to install fine, but some of the newer apps that specifically support WM5 won't (application not intended for this device). It is like verizon locked it for WM5 apps but not earlier smartphone apps? Has anyone successfully app-unlocked the device? Also, has anyone been able to use this phone as a bluetooth modem? Not a huge deal to me initially since I am in an EVDO-deprived area (only 1X data connect). Dan

so i dunno, the phone's okay i guess. some of the functions are ridiculously inconvenient, but i haven't had any real problems with it, the occasonal freezing (twice in three days). i also find it slightly crappy that i'm paying full price (as if it were for my computer) for broadband monthly when roughly half the sites i go to don't work/aren't compatible/are realy just inacessible, but i can deal with that. no, the major problem i'm having seems to be with activesync. i might be doing something wrong or maybe my system isn't compatible. i have a toshiba tecra 8100. it's pentium III and pretty up to date program wise. 320 Mb of RAM. the program installed fine and it recognizes my q when connected but i when i try to manually copy files (.doc files so i can upload to the internet), the mobile device window comes up empty and when i try to go elsewhere it freezes. so i'm not sure what's happening. am i doing something wrong or is my system wrong, what's supposed to happen when you hit the explore button? are there supposed to be files in the mobile device window that pops up?

How is the 3-way calling? I have a treo 700p. It's a great device, horrible 3-way calling. Let me be more specific. If i'm on the phone with a friend, and someone else calls. I can either pick that person up individually and have 2 phone conversations going on at the same time: 1 active and 1 on hold and swap and swap and swap (and never conference them together after that decision) or I can receive the 3rd call and put it right into a Conference call (and never unlink them). Thus, to get rid of one, i must get rid of all. Also, i can't make more than 1 3-way phone call without hanging up on everyone. How is the Moto Q? If you don't know, can you find out? Thanks, I have 2 days left to return my treo for the worry free 15 day guarantee. Let me know. Thanks.

I had gotten my hands on a Motorola Q and liked it very much. Then I learned that 1) no creating/editing of MS documents, and 2) no copy/paste. Big disappointments. So, 1) Does anyone know if Motorola Q will run the Documents To Go software that comes with, say the Treo 700p? 2) How about copy/paste. For the times when it's desirable to grab some text from a Web site and email it to someone (for instance), what does one do? Copy/Paste is a very basic, routine function. There must be some way...?

I am an avid Blackberry user - but lost mine last week. So, I replaced it with the Q. so, far I hated it for the first two and I am slowly coming around. Here are the problems I have faced: 1. I use Yahoo as my email and outlook at home as my contact/calendar/task organizer. Combining Active Sync (desktop sync software), Wireless Sync (over the air sync software that requires your PC be turned on to act as a server) and straight POP3 mail service was REALLY confusing and bad. I think I have it figured out with no Active Sync, Wireless sync only synching contacts/calendar/tasks (because I don't want to rely on having my PC on to retrieve email) and direct POP3 email retrieval on the phone itself. Is there a better solution? Other minor stuff: Looks like the contact does not handle company phone extensions like Blackberry - that is the Blackberry waits for the user to click the track wheel to enter extensions (or voicemail passwords!) after connecting - that was a great blackberry feature. Looks like the phone only has speed dial for numbers - I used to keep my wifes number inder C for "Cheryl" but now I need to keep it under something like 2 - which I can never remember. The home screen doesn't seem modifyable. I'd like to move things around and delete some - can I do that? The windows home screens don't have enough info and the verizon one is not organized well for me.

The way gmail does email is a little different than everyone else. They're system may be causing you to get the sent mail in your inbox. I've tried setting up my GMail account on my Q, and though I can send mail from that account, I can't seem to receive any. The Q connects and acts like it's doing the send/receieve but never retrieves any mail. I have gone into my gmail account and changed my pop settings to enable pop acces so all that is set up but I'm still not getting email....thoughts?

Motorola has a support forum where you can post questions at http://tstemeaaware.corp.mot.com/hellomoto/q/default.asp. You can usually get a pretty quick response there. They also have a wiki you can link to and some people have posted good information there. And there's a really big forum at qusers.com but you have to wade through a lot of bs to get answers. I'm putting this here because it looks like Sascha has closed this thread.

Just purchased the "Q" and previously had the Trio. Two Questions: 1) Anyone know if the Q can pick up the "Notes" from Microsoft Outlook? I was able to do it on the Trio. 2) Trio had a "keyguard" so that nothing happened to drain the battery unless one specific button was pushed. The Q light whenever any key is pushed, and it excessively drains the battery, even when using the "keylock" --- any solution? Norman

Had the Q for about a week. I put in a security code and must have not entered it correctly. Couldn't unlock the phone on power up!!! for all intent and purposes, the phone was dead. When to Verizon techs and they couldn't do anything about...or maybe just didn't know how. There is no master reset pin and they couldn't reflash it. Ended up getting another one. Now this is really weird...every time you attempt to unlock the phone and it's the wrong code, the phone adds an additional 5 seconds before you can try to re-enter another code!!! By the time I was finished, I was up too over 400 seconds. That is sooooooo freaked up. I understand the security, but why make a phone that can't be reset? In any event, resetting would erase the data in the phone if that is the concern. A small price to pay for rather than not having a phone.

I have had similar problems with Moto Q battery running out. Actually, I exhanged a whole phone AND a battery and the batter ran out again within 24 hours of charging to a full capacity. I contacted Motorola and Verizon Tech support staff. They suggested turning off/killing all the unnecessary applications by going to "System Tools", "Task Manager" and choosing "Kill All". That move only increased the battery to 18 hour use so far with minimal phone/contact list use without internet/e-mail use. Also, it is inconvenient to remember to turn off every time you use an application. When I talked to the support staff again, they suggested returning the phone since it is an inherent mechanical problem. I am going to try to stick with Q by buying an extended battery. If it does not work, I will return it and ask for Treo. I will try to update here.

Do we know whether it will work in the Q and if not will VZN eventually change the firmware to allow the card to work with an additional fee to VZN?

We got two Spectec Mini-SD WiFi cards and they do not work in the Q. Amazingly we did get it to work in the Treo 700w using an SD-MiniSD adapter. I found a post from another site the author called himnself PionerMDX & he gave a great explanation (below): I've been talking with Spectec from Taiwan, the only company in the world that currently makes a Mini SD Wifi SDIO card. I love EVDO but since the Q also support an SDIO mini sd card, I was also hoping that I could get additional WiFi support on the Q. The bad news is that the Q's power output on the mini sd slot is currently not powerful enough to power the albeit low 120ma requirements for the spectec wifi card. The only way to currently make it work is to have the Q plugged in, to get extra juice. ahhhh I asked Spectec about possibly creating a new wifi card that would possibly use a bit less power but they replied saying that they currently have the lowest powered card in the world already and Motorola should be helping out here. I have no idea if a future firmware update could adjust the mini sd's slots voltage output to allow the card to work. I just feel its too bad that it doesn't support the wifi card out of the box...well it does if its plugged in. If anyone has a contact at Motorola, please let them know of this problem.

Ok - I solved my browser problems to get access to outlook webmail (with frames). I tried Opera - mini (for Windows Mobile 2003 for Smartphone). It'll cost 24USD for the non-trial version but it works well - I could even keep up to date to the MLB all star game - and do a mapquest. I'm an opera fan now especially with its multiple windows. I'm putting Opera on speed dial (and Task Manager on speed dial - you can quickly close programs etc. )

Hi everyone, I just purchased the "Q" and have it currently linked to one exchange server but want to know how to connect it to another to run simutaneously. I was confused as the owners manual, and motorola website boast being able to have "8" seperate email accounts. I have tried to add another server thru Activesync 4.1 and it doesnt seem to allow it. Does anyone have experience or knowledge of how to do this? I basically want to have two seperate main email accounts synched with an exchange server, and I can access my others thru the web browser. Please email me any links at nodog4fun@yahoo if you have any advice, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and good luck!

Careful when setting up wireless sync. Basically the Verizon server acts as intermediary between the Q and your Outlook files on your PC. It will also do so with Exhcange Server. It is VERY easy to get stuck in this process if you dont understand how it operates. For example, I thought I would sync with both my home and office PCs one wireless, other active sync - not a good idea. I ended up with duplicate copies of everything on the Verizon server, my home PC and my office PC. Once things get on the server they are pushed out to your Outlook and phone. So just erasing your Outlook or changing folders wont work because Verizon pushes it right back. And forget about trying to erase entries at Verizon. You have to stop all services and delete things one at a time in some cases. Also, if you get too much data on their server - it locks everything up because there are memory restrictions. If that happens, the second tier support has to erase your account which takes a couple of days. Real hassle. I would be very careful in setting up multiple pcs with the wireless as well before thoroughly understanding it. For example, never do active sync and wireless sync at same time - its either one or the other unless you really know what you are doing. If I had it to do over I would do one PC and sync it via wireless sync and disable active sync on the Q(Active Sync is a waste!). BTW, you can have several mail accounts sync directly with Verizon. Doesnt delete them from POP3 location, then all of these emails will be pushed to phone. Problem could be that they are then pushed to your outlook at work so home emails will show up there as well - not a problem for me but maybe for some. Sorry for rambling, just spent a few days dealing with this with Verizon and thought I could save someone the hassle.

I just got a Q last week and already i'm having 2 problems. I had an incoming call that I tried to answer. Somehow, the phone "freeze" when I pressed the answer button. The screen shows that the call is connected, but its not. So when I try to call the person back, the phone indicates an error message. The only way to solve it is to reboot. Second problem I had was downloading emails. There would be an error message during "receiving" and later prompting me if I would like to send the error report to Microsfot. Similiar to an error log on a PC. Just want to see if anyone else is having this problem. Personal Opinion: The Q is not all that great. I was so hyped about getting it that it was disappointing to see it crash on me so many times.

Motorola even audiovox got the WI FI card right in their starcom phone.. This phone to me isnt work poo, thats why mine is going back,,,grow up motorola and listen to you customers, and the small battery is toes usless when using a bluetooth headset it sucks the battery dry From a once VERY LOYAL MOTOROLA CUSTOMER

I went looking for the contacts and calendar data files so I could copy them over to the SD card for inclusion in the back-up, but I can't tell which files they are. Can you help?

Please forgive my ignorance in advance...looking to buy the Q (or the Bberry pearl, would anyone know if & when Verizon may carry it?) Q questions: - PUSH email? does not support, but I've hear things about Goodlink? Is this a downloadable app that enables you to have push capabilities? - editing docs - no can do so I hear (although the vzn rep told me you can yesterday...NOT). Is it likely that if this functionality comes out, it will be downloadable, or do you have to scrap your purchase and buy a new model typically? - Sucks I hear it doesn't have cut and paste. Nice feature on my old Bberry. Again, above, think this is something that may come out in downloadable app? - Sounds like the battery life is a problem, but vzn offers the extended battery for $20. I wonder how much difference it makes, in time and also size? Thanks!

I would not expect to see the Pearl on the Verizon Wireless network before end of q2 or perhaps q4 of 2007. Okay the Q update is out BTW, ALLOWING PUSH email and TETHERING(use as a modem). Read the directions!!! and here is some hints, get your info before you flash your phone NOTE: The CDMA SysID entry apparently changes based on where you live. I believe 21 is for Cincinnati. 1. dial ##073887* and then send(do this quick or it will dial, its tricky) 2. enter 000000 (six zero's) for the security code hit ok 3. User Activation hit ok 4. NAM1 HIT OK 5. under MIN erase what is there and put in your number 6. under MDN erase what is there and put in your number 7. under CDMA SysID put in 21 8. hit back , back , and then exit 9. restart the phone 10. dial *228 and then choose option 2 and you are all set

I currently work Desktop Support for a biotech company. Our CFO just got a Motorola Q and we are running into the wierdest issues. When connected to ActiveSync 4.2 everything syncs just fine, however, new emails will not push down to the Q from Outlook. Then when you disconnect from the USB cable, it won't sync at all until you reboot the device. Once a reboot is complete, it will sync wireless everytime without any problems. Is anyone else experiencing something like this? FYI, I have performed both a master reset of the Q and completely reinstalled AS 4.2. we are a 99.9% Mac environment and got our first Q user a week ago... The MarkSpace software Missing Sync for Windows Mobile works well... but it doesn't work with Meeting Maker (the new Meeting Maker uses NotifyLink, which will support teh Q and is being released within a week)

The email client on the Q when set to POP is strange. It doesn't really sync to a mac, it functions as a standalone device that can receive the same email the mac does. It's not a Blackberry or GOOD Technology level solution, but it's pretty good.

Zimbra also support the Q, and we are looking at that as an Exchange alternative in the big picture.

I've been using my Moto Q as a music player using Coreplayer for two months. I am using the proper type of adapter to bump the stereo plug up to 2.5 mm and it has been sounding great with a pair of Shure earphones. Unfortunately in the last two days I keep losing all audio through the left channel on a system level. Restarting the Q does absolutely nothing. Strangely the only thing that corrects this is navigating to settings/sounds and playing any of the ring tones. The left channel then comes back and all is well.
Any thoughts?

Is there a way to set format of outgoing messages as HTML? There are few things worse than replying to a long email stream that is full of tabs, color formatting, etc. and being guilty of ruining it all with a text only message.

I also am tring out the Q for my company. So far its great. My boss asked me to research the voice recording capabilities of the Q. I know there are voice notes on the phone already, but I need something with more options like pause, rewind, and call recording. Are there any programs out there that I can download that can do this? Thanks

I have owned a Motorola Q phone long enough to become fairly quick at using its capabilities. I am now searching for a very small portable printer that could be connected to the phone to print out a document when I am in a more remote location i.e. away from my main computer and laptops. Can anyone help with a suggestion for a product that might serve my need? Thanks.

I have the Q for a few months and cannot get my pop3 email which is webmail to go through outlooke. It keeps creating a new account. My Q is through Sprint.

I can get it through outlook when I connect the usb cable but unfortunately I need it when I am not able to use my laptop.

In case you are wondering my webmail is through cavalier (cavtel.net). I have tried everything and nothing seems to work.

My work is now done through email but if I have to be at may laptop all the time. I am losing money.

Anyone out there that help, please please let me know. Otherwise I will have to upgrade my Q to something that I can get email through outlook without have to connect with a cable.

I purchased a Moto Q and I am growing increasingly frustrated with Verizon! I am paying a monthly fee for unlimited pix/flix messaging, but I declined the internet service or data plan on the Q [b/c it is $45/month!!!!]. Because I declined the data plan, my pix/flix messaging was disabled! My txting also does not support incoming txts with more than 160 characters! The other phones provide these features with ease and MUCH less expense. The Q smartphone doesn't seem so smart after all. Or maybe there is someone out there smarter who can instruct me on a way around this to maintain my pix/flix messaging??? Possibly a way to get free internet access?

Any help is appreciated! :P

I have had my Sprint MOTO Q for about 2 weeks now (they gave it to me since my 6th I500 crashed). I would much rather have a Linux pda or palm... oh well.. (i know there is one coming out soon - a Linux based phone). I am getting used to the MOTO Q. I have a couple of questions?
1. what is PDANET? where is it?
2. where is software for my Moto q?
i would love a database and java?
3. can i use something other than outlook and
has anyone figured out how to get palm software
onto windows. specifically i had "THINKDB" which held all my database stuff... i need to get that data to my MOTOQ.

i hope this was not too much. I am also prepared to write some of the neat stuff I have written for palm here!

thanx a bunch

I have used my Motorola Q as a tethered modem just fine for awhile -- via USB with my Mac PowerBook G4 using OSX 10.2.8, and using Bluetooth with my MacBook Intel using OSX 10.4.10. Recently, though, it stopped working with the MacBook. I downloaded a freeware text editor and a new home-screen scheme onto the phone, but those shouldn't affect it. What I think is the problem is that I updated my MacBook to OSX 10.4.11. Now, the Bluetooth Setup Assistant hangs on the first "Gathering more information about your phone" screen. If I try connecting some other way, i.e. "Browse Device," the phone asks for a Passkey but the Mac doesn't display one. Any advice?

I have trying to figure out a way to backup my Text Messages (SMS Messages) from my Verizon Motorola Q to my PC. Is there a free program that will do this or do you know where the messages are stored? I have found the Windows\Messaging folder, which seems to have similar date stamps to text messages, but if i remove the files from the phone the text still appears on the phone. Any ideas how to back-up these files before I refresh my phone?

I have a question. Probably one that can't be done or answered i'm guessing because i looked all over the internet for the answer and had no luck. Does anyone have any idea or know if it's possible to use a Motorola Q with a different cellphone provider? It is from Alltel and i want to use it with cellcom. I have been told that some how i can get the Alltel programs off but i tried the Hard reset and no luck either. Cellcom said that they could program it to thier service but it may brick the phone which would really suck. If i could get the carrier screen to go away and have a plain moto q to use with any provider. I am hoping it can be done because it widows and with windows abything can be done. I know that the phone is programed for the certain providers from the factory but if anybody knows anything PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help me out. THANK YOU

I am having the same problem that Kelly Trager mentioned having back in November. I am not able to get a tone from the number keys when I am connected to a phone call, so I can't use my phone to check my voicemail or make selections when calling numbers that require it.

I have had my Motorola Q. since November and have Alltel as my service provider.

Did anyone have an answer for this?

2 questions:

1. My company does not allow me to access my webmail from any smart phone. I have the Moto Q and I heard from several people that there is a way to get past that. I am in sales and it makes no sense to keep our salesforce from doing that.

2. More specific to the Q- How can I get by the no copy and paste feature with this phone. If an email comes through my hotmail account asking to copy and paste a link in the browser for activation, I can not do it because I do not have the feature and the email comes through with no hyperlink!

I will glady appreciate any hELP

Okay, both my husband and I have had a Moto Q since November of 07'. Earlier this week my daughter dropped my Moto Q in water so that one is out of commision. I now I have my husband's Moto Q and he got a new phone. My issue is that with my old Q when I downloaded Yahoo Go it asked me to sync my contacts which is great because now I have everything on my Yahoo Address book. I downloaded Yahoo Go on my husband's phone (which is now my phone) and it has not prompted me to sync my contacts. I have tried to look everywhere for an answer but nothing. Can you help?

I have a coworker that has a Alltel Motorola Q9C with Mobile 6.1/active sync. It was flashed for Cricket and all features work but it cannot connect to email wirelessly only through active sync (connected via usb). Is this a limitation of the service (Cricket) or do I have configs wrong. When it tries to connect it says that it is not configure but email works fine. We just want it for pop3 email.

Thanks!

I have the Q9c, and it's been great for the last year. I use the VZW layout. I don't like any of the other layouts, but I have one issue that bothers me, now that I've upgraded to the unlimited-data plan.

Where it says: Email(0) SMS(0) MMS(0) VMail(0)

The "Email" is Outlook Express.. When I click "Email" it takes me to outlook and then i press the right arrow to go to my Gmail account. I want the "Email" to say "Gmail" so the number (0) reflects my actual Gmail messages.

I've screwed with the settings every way I can imagine and this just doesn't seem possible. Any help would be appreciated.
