Have you ever wanted to put your cell phone on vibrate mode and give yourself a back massage? Well, soon there might be a therapeutic cell phone to help you out. Motorola submitted a patent application on April 20 for a cell phone (or "wireless device") that can vibrate to alert you of an incoming call and/or "be used for therapeutic stimulation of the various epidermal and subcutaneous areas of the wearer's body." Why did Motorola think this was a good idea? "Because muscle stimulation is known to have therapeutic effects," the patent says. You can set the time that your phone will vibrate and choose a pre-programmed vibration pattern. Better yet, program your own pattern, or "alternatively, [a pattern] can be downloaded to the device...from, for example, a doctor's website or in-office computer by a therapist." But don't think that this invention can only benefit humans. Fido has pain, too. "Other applications, such as training or therapeutic purposes on animals is within the true scope and spirit of the present invention." [Note: This image is just a regular Motorola PEBL. No therapeutic vibrating yet.] [Found via RealTechNews]

Is that a cell phone in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?

My 93 year old mother has carpal tunnel syndrome. It cuts our calls short. If this would ease the pain while talking, I think it's a great idea. This assumes that you can use it as a phone while it's vibrating. Hope they put a volumn control on it. My cat has already put it on his own Christmas list.

If your grandmother is already using a cellphone? why don't you get her a headset? Then she doesn't have to hold the phone at all! Besides, I would think having the phone vibrate during a call would make it near impossible to hear the other party as the phone is going to vibrate your ear/skull/whatever else is in close contact with it...

I guess some people would loooove this phone. Sure, I was thinking of those who need neck massages, "intimate" stimulation and lonely people. Morotola is trying to get to the S*x industry?

Why not take communication to the next level. Add temperature sensors, 3d motion sensors, landscape (shape) sensors on the sending device. Receivers on the receiving device. It adds a different meaning to the KISS principle on the design of a device. Send a real kiss to your sweetheart in Iraq. Record it and relive it. Now, add the vibration and ... AMPLIFICATION (if needed)....
