Now that the latest round of Apple buzz is fading in our ears, we have finally gotten an Apple iPod Hi-Fi ($349 direct) in for review. PC Mag Audio Analyst Mike Kobrin has been playing with the new Apple Hi-Fi all afternoon--and it has been very, very loud. Not only does it sound really good, but even at maximum volume there was no distortion. And yes, this does hurt your ears. As Mike puts it: I cranked up the volume a few notches below maximum and I could feel the wind coming out of the two bass ports from several feet away—not to mention the remarkably low-distortion aural assault on my ears. I was there. I felt the wind. This boombox can do weddings. You can read Mike's entire ears-on Hi-Fi review here.

Loud is not the key to audio quality though. The frequency response of 53Hz to 16kHz ± 3 dB is absolutely ridiculous in 2006. There are $20 dollar headphones that can top that. All one has to do is visit Circuit City or Best Buy, and see all of the options that are 1)far less price 2) far superior quality. And they can push air also! $350? You must be joking.

It looks good and has good sound quality. The only drawback to this is that it costs $350. Maybe at a lower price more people would buy it.
