So I'm reading a recent copy of Wired and I find out that my new favorite hobby, crossword puzzles, is OUT. Sudoku is IN. (And the little dog is UP). I got into crosswords playing Ink Crosswords, a free game that comes in the Microsoft Experience Pack for Tablet PC. But that's okay. I can be a follower as well as the next guy.

But we're Gearlog. We don't want our Sudoku puzzles to be the same as everyone else's. We're techies. We're geeks. And then it hits me. I run the idea by the powers-that-be, fully expecting that she'll shoot it down, as usual. But no! She loves it! And with these words of encouragement, "Now, will you get out of my office!", I'm off to create the first edition of what will become a weekly feature:

BINARY SUDOKU!

If you haven't tried Sudoku before, you'll want to start with the Newbie puzzle. But if you've been playing for a while, or if you just like to dive in with a pencil in each hand, then take a stab at the Power User puzzle. Either way, have fun:

I may be an expert at standard Sudoku, but that Newbie binary Sudoku is damn challenging!

I've been looking at a bunch of sudoku variations, but this is the best yet!

Please help me. Unless... it's cheating! Yes it must be. Damn your April fool's jokes, making people spend hours trying to solve an unsolvable puzzle.

In binary there is only two numbers 0 and 1.

In binary there is only two numbers 0 and 1. This is the guy who probably actually feels challenged by binary sudoku. Thanks for weighing in, Edward. (Before anybody says something about Ted not being short for Edward, watch Family Guy first.)

Those who understand binary, and those who don't.

These are not legitimate puzzles, each group needs to contain all the numbers. The horizontal and vertical are fine but each region on contains either a one of a zero. The following would be more correct:

----------
1 0
________
0 1
________

Although the binary sudoku puzzles displayed here are the easiest of binary sudoku, there are two sudoku puzzle types easier than this.

In general, binary sudoku puzzles are easy. Contact me if you want to try one that's much harder to solve.

whats wrong with 16bit or 32bit binaries don't how it would work except that it would cover 16*16 or 32*32 squares... Yeah they always say that.
