Google PC

Looks like Microsoft may finally have a lot to fear with the possible roll out of the Google PC. Sources report that Google will unveil its low-priced PC at Wal-Mart and possibly other retailers, and would operate on Google's own operating system.

And what else does Google have up its sleeves? Well, you may soon be seeing something called "Google Cubes," which the LA Times describes as a small hardware box that could allow users to move songs, videos and other digital files between their computers and TV sets. Google may also be entering pay-TV services.

But, some folks beg to differ on the possibility of Google selling its own PC. According to Tech Dirt, the idea is highly unlikely, considering that it probably won't sell well at Wal-Mart.

Google's co-founder and president, Larry Page, will be speaking this Friday at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Our editors will be there reporting on all of the new and upcoming technologies and products, so hopefully they'll get to listen to Page's speech and discover the real scoop.

I think that IF Google can make their PC's more bullet proof against attacks such as viruses, ad-awware, and spyware. And able to make them VERY user friendly all at the same. I think Bill Gates and Microsoft might be in serious trouble.

Easy!! Just buy the defunct OS/2 from IBM, add some Google stuff to it and sell it!! If it wasn't becacuse IBM it's got the marketing genius of a gnat OS/2 would have been one hell of an OS.

This makes absolute perfect sense ! The Google brand name is second to none. The Wal-Mart sales machine covers all corners of North America...especially those rural areas where technology and high-speed bandwidth isn't readily available. Wal-Mart will sell more of any computer product from a Best Buy, CompUSA, Curcuit City, Fry's, combined ! I've sold product through Wal Mart and all the other before...and let me tell you....the volume of computer hardware product they sell boggled our CEO's mind ! Havinga low-price "PC" sold through Wal-Mart will be an incredible success....and Wal-Mart will love the spike in foot traffic that the Google device will bring...along with impulse purchases once people come into the stores. Wal-Mart will succeed, even is the Google "PC" doesn't sell well....from the increase in traffic and sales. But...don't discount Google. They wouldn't be entering the hardware consumer market, if they didn't have a revolutionary product....which will be the hub for other products and services to revolve around. Grand slam, home run !

why would google get in bed with the bottom feeding walmart? If google wants to help in this tech driven world, they could do so many things with out helping walmart on its race to the bottom. In case you haven't noticed, America is catching on to the bad business practices of this china operated marketplace!

A google PC would be great! Sell it anywhere - make them cheap enough so everyone can get on the net. Who cares if they sell them at Walmart? The last post said "America is catching on to the bad business practices of this china operated marketplace!" I don't know about that - every time I drive by Walmart it's packed! Shop smart! Shop S-Mart!

This doesn't seem to be a good fit with the direction that Google has been going with everything else. I would be concerned with the operability of the system. It would most likely be built on top of FreeBSD, Linux or another Open Source operating system. Other then OSX, I don't think that any of these have the ease of use that you get with Windows. Good Windows Machines are dropping in Price all time. As much as I love Google Search, News, Pixela and Maps... Their applications can be buggy and hard to use. Peoples expectations would be dashed if a Google PC had similar issues. It is the Third Party uses of the Googles API's that often set Google apart. But they do keep things interesting. John

If it's sold at wal-mart, I won't buy it, I won't be using Google period anymore if it is. I do not like wal-mart or their major affiliates. wal-mart does what the Waltons want, in a city not to far away they voted against wal-mart, and they didn't want wal-mart there, but wal-mart fought back and still built their store, I won't even drive past it, most people won't. wal-mart has not messed up this community because the people choose not to shop there, and soon they will pull out due to the loss in profits, and the community will have a new building that can be used for the good of the people.

I expect this new PC and Operating system designed by Google will have features and capabilities that will outperform that of MS. MS has dominated the PC industry for long. It is about time for a revolution. One that will bring about lots of smile in homes, organizations and every where on the planet. Google, please don't reparkage what MS did. We need something different that works. Keep up the good google work.

Google PC......Genius!!!! Teaming up with Wal-Mart.... Even more Genius!!! I would buy a Google PC, and its a great Idea for google to reach everyone from the city where the Internet is everywhere, to the middle of nowhere where people are still using dial-up

Google is going to make a big mistake in this team up! I'm telling you guys. I live in a small area, around a population of 500 people, and everybody with internet has cable internet. People are making small towns sound technologically ignorant, when the truth is, there are some people who are technologically advanced who enjoy the quiet surroundings and seclusion of a small area. Google's PC is going to be a wait and see; it will either make Google stronger, by providing something new and unthought-of. Or, it will destroy it by going to a retail chain that only a select few go to and many more refuse to do business with. They have a better bet by teaming up with Target, Best Buy, or Circuit City. At least Best Buy has Geek Squad, where the uneducated can have their computer set up. I just think that it is only someone's own personal preference as to the reason why wal-mart was brought in as the prospective retailer that would simply be a blunder that destroys Google politically. As the ever famous cartoon "Wal-mart vs. Mom & Pop" says in it's song about wal-mart "Bring your cousin as a date" and ever since I saw that cartoon, the image in my mind went from a redneck shopping at wal-mart, to an inbred redneck shopping at wal-mart that are bringing their second cousins, I mean their kids, no, they're both, with them to that store.

Well, i gotta hand it to them. Even as a rumor, this is making a big dust-cloud. Imagine if it is enacted? I do admit Google may have buggy apps, but the ease of use and a certain high degree of consumer assistance, plus the fact that many ppl want something other than MS, cheaper than OSX, and easier than Linux...this may be a good way to experiment. As for where to sell it...anywhere. It might be a good idea to open a small business and team up with Google to make a physical Google Store (just re-read that one). But, only time will tell. As for me, i just wanna see this.

Given the recently announced Sun / Google alliance and Sun's new commitment to Open Source, and Google's reliance on Open Source I would expect the Google OS to be a variant of Linux / Unix. It will be nice to see another (besides MAC OS/X) lightweight, secure and less-buggy OS competing with Windows. Ease of use will not be a factor if Google does a decent job. Most people who complain about the Unix user interfaces are not running any modern Unix variant. Most are as easy / easier to use than Windows and anyone who is tech-savvy finds that the actual use of the OS is much more straightforward. The company I work for makes a lightweight media server that would be ideal for interoperability with the Google Cube. A truely digital home is just around the corner and when it arrives is will not be based on bloated, buggy Microsoft Operating Systems. Microsoft needs to get out of the OS arena. They should concentrate on applications. They know this as well as I do.
