I just finished a big roundup of USB keys for PC Magazine, which I will link to when it posts. Until then, this little number should tide you over. The Swiss+Tech Micro Pro with Flash Drive ($29.99, 32MB) is part standard USB 2.0 flash drive. They only unique feature here is a slider that prevents data from being overwritten. (Why don't all USB keys have this?) The neat part, of course, is the Micro Pro part, a mini-Leatherman-type device that includes a wirecutter, two screwdrivers, and a set of pliers. It is a little bulky to use as a key fob, but if you have a geeky Bob Vila in your family this makes a great gift.

About a year ago I spent way too much money at CompUSA for the 1GB version that looks more like a small Swiss Army knife than a key fob. The USB memory can be separated from the sharp parts for airline travel, provided I remember. Since I'm likely to forget, I keep the knife/USB key on a bag that doesn't travel much. If I don't keep it teathered, the device is so small that it spends months lost on or in my desk. I'm sorry I bought it.

I just bought this &*@$*in' Swiss-$#*%-tech USB Flash Drive at a local Target. I thought it was the neatest damn thing there was. I mean, a flash drive and multipurpose tool for less than 50 clams. I only got to use it once!! The write protection somehow doesn't turn off. Either way I flip the switch, the message that appears when I try to save my work is "Cannot write to a write protected disk. The stupid switch doesn't freakin' work!! I thought I'd be gettin' a hell of a deal buying this thing. I thought it was a steal for such an item. Well it turns out that it was only my money that got stolen when I spent it on a POS like this! For the record, I am currently attempting to contact Swiss Tech on this issue (though I am failing in getting through. Gee I wonder why?). Other than that, I agree with Mr. Coursey when he and I both say "I'm sorry I bought it."

Wow... Luckily I didn't buy mine. Someone gave me mine as a gift. (Oh boy!) I've been a network engineer and IT consultant for well over 12 years and I've never had this many issues with anything right out of the box. Justin (above) has the same issues I'm having. Stupid switch is not even functional. All it does is turn the protect on or "more-on" ;) I feel that at some point someone should get their money back for this. I got my files on it once, and after that... No bueno. Sux.
