Animal control is never pretty, but when using the Gentle Spray Cintronella Anti-Bark Collar ($109.99 direct) it smells pretty bad too. I have a nine-month-old Pomeranian, Bebe, that doesn't like it when my neighbor leaves for work at 6am. In fact, she doesn't like it when anyone enters or exits any apartment on my floor. And she barks, very loudly. This is a normal response for a dog, the result of hundreds of years of domestic breeding. Just the same, I would like it to stop. The Gentle Spray collar is supposed to fix this, and after a few days of use I am pretty impressed. The collar is "bark activated" The dog barks, and is immediately hit with a blast of cintronella spray in the face. This is odious enough to wrinkle the dog's nose, but it isn't enough to bother us humans, unless you have a serious allergy. The packaging says this is harmless and "twice as effective" as electroshock collars. My vet says it is safe and humane, as does the pet supply store owner. I can't help but feel a bad about using a chemical weapon to control my puppy. But it is working.

I thought this site was supposed to be about *new* stuff!? This kind of bark control collar has been around for years (along with the kind that delivers a shock). You shouldn't feel bad for trying it. I can tell you we had one for one of our dogs, it worked for awhile and then I swear it got so she liked the smell & she barked more to get it. We finally gave up. I think some dogs, esp. small dogs, just are barkers.

For those yappy litte rat-dogs, the solution is simple. The subject says it all.

I think "barks" go with dogs. What's next: a collar to put on one's infant, to discourage it from crying?

the device actually also makes a bit of a hissing sound the moment the spray is released. Once the dog is conditioned well enough to the device and is sensitive enough, just the sound of activation along with that burst of air may be enough to díscourage barking in the future. So if you are using this evice and its working well on the dog, try it occasionally without the citronella, though citronella is an oil derived from grasses and pretty harmless.

I HATE THIS STUPID GADGET! LIKE SERIOUSLY IF YOU DONT WANT BARKING DN'T GET A DOG! LIKE WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE SPRAYED WITH CHEMICALS OR BE CONTROLLED! I hate people like you, i hate the whol goddamn human race in fact. You are so BLIND to what this is doing. HELLO?! DID YOU NOT READ THE FUCKING WORDS 'CHEMICAL'. If you don't want it to bark, give it away. You shouldn't have gotten one anyway if you knew you didn't like when dogs bark. Also, little dogs are KNOWN for barking. Not just b/c they don't like when people go in our out as you STUPIDY staited, they are scared. There response to anything is to bark to protect THEMSELFS and YOU. So what's this chemical shit doing? Telling the dog he/she can not do what he/she knows? If you felt so 'bad' for using it you would have stopped. But no, you're one of those many blind people to what is going on. Do you know how many problems this chemical shit can cause your dog? A lot. Read up, buddy. If you wern't so lazy and so goddamn stupid, you'd know to take your dog to a trainer, or train your dog it's self. They are not stupied and sure as hell don't need you putting a coller on it and spraying stuff on it. I hope you die, seriouslly. I say you check out Peta2.com and learn a thing or two.

I think you people need to stop with the bashing of this poor person. Yeah its a nasty thing to do, but you dont know the reasoning he uses it, he already said that he felt bad, so why are you guys all bad mouthing him? Have you ever thought that not all people around you understand? I think the best thing to do is to have someone come aeouns who can take the dog out, but who says people have cash for that even? Owning a dog is tough and we all do our best, be good to others as you are to caring about your pets, dont bash. -Me

I just wanted to comment on how ironic it is that those that are bad mouthing the person using the bark collar are so completely illiterate. One of you didn't even spell collar correctly. Aside from that, it would be every dog owner's preference to avoid using a startling spray collar or even to avoid scolding their dog for doing something unacceptable, like barking, or worse, biting someone. But, there are disturbance laws against loud, prolonged noises such as dog barking that can lead to fines in the best case scenario or, in the worst case scenario, requesting that the owner get rid of the dog. I can't see that being a better option when it can be very difficult to find a good home for a dog. Although barking can be rather annoying to the owner, I'm sure the bark collar person's biggest concern is attempting to be a responsible dog owner and abide by the law. I would like to know if those of you bashing this person own dogs and if you've ever had to train a dog who barks excessively not to bark...and were you successful? If you owned a dog and didn't do anything about their excessive barking, people would bash you for being an irresponsible dog owner. That is one of the things that leads to more and more restrictions for dogs and their owners.

I agree with everything Sami said. Also to that ignorate person promoting Peta - you want to talk about animal cruelty? That organization you support is responsible for the killings of over 14,000 healthy, adoptable dogs since 1998. They'd rather use all that donated money for campaigns, instead of feeding and caring for animals. Ingrid Newkirk has said so herself. You, as a Peta supporter, have no room to talk about animal cruelty. Peta is the cruelest organization around. Why don't YOU check out petakillsanimals.com

Don't feel bad. I have three dogs , a maltipoo, a beagle, and a beagle-lab mix. They all love to bark when the game warden drives by in his boat (I live on a lake), along with any other noises that happen at night. (ie.deer, neighbor's dogs, things of that nature) I have tried everything to get them to be quiet. The only thing that seems to work is shooting off a fire-cracker next to their pen to scare them and in result scare off anything that was making them bark. Do what works, they know that you love them and thay will always love you.
PS. All of you animal right activists, please learn how to spell. If you are going to bitch at least use correct grammar, therefore you seem at least semi-intelligent and people might consider what you are saying.

For cryin' out loud people. Take a fricken pill! The collar is totally humane! A dog that is constantly barking is a dog with behavior issues. I mean, if I was yelling at everyone that walked on by, my parents would have smacked me upside my head. And yea- they'd continue to do so until I shut the hell up. There is nothing wrong with disciplining your dog. In fact - it is the right thing to do, and any RESPONSIBLE dog owner would agree. I mean seriously - if you had a child that screamed all of the time, I doubt you'd walk around saying "oh she has every right to speak her mind. we're not going to discipline her senseless screaming and crying because that's what young children do. we just give her everything she wants and let her do things her way cause its the right thing to do". For cryin out loud already - a dog owner who doesnt do something about a dog's obsessive barking, is like a parent who refuses to discipline their child.

i can't believe how unfair all of you are being. i just got a rescue dog two months ago, and sadly he barks when we are not at home. our neighbor upstairs has complained to the point where she threatened to call the police. even though she is a whiney hermit who never leaves her house and probably should not have moved into a dog building, she has the power card. yes, i'd love to bring my dog everywhere i go, but I can't. though i'm looking into moving, my only chance to avoid the cops coming to my house to confiscate my innocent shih tzu is to use the barking collar. we're on the second week and I haven't had any recent complaints.

I beg to disagree. The use of bark collars is very important especially when training your dog for these devices help reduce nuisance barking.
