The AOL Optimized PC by Systemax ($299 direct, with 17-inch CRT monitor, AOL contract required) is a great choice and an excellent value for the computer novice, and not just because it's an inexpensive PC. We'd recommend the AOL PC for people who know a bit about PCs and "just want to surf the Web"—with or without a broadband connection. Though it's not aimed at the übergeek, it's a compelling choice for the computer novice or people who stay after work to surf because they don't have a computer at home. David, I have a soft spot for AOL that has caused me endless grief with friends and colleagues, but this really does seem like a good deal for a certain type of user. When you factor in the cost and effort involved updating your firewall, antivirus, and spyware software the AOL is pretty compelling. (PS, as I was writing this comment a PC Mag Editor came into my office to give me argue about AOL PC. No lie.)
